A beginner's guide to houseplant light and window direction

One of the most common reasons houseplants struggle indoors is not overwatering or underwatering, but simply being placed in the wrong light. Before you buy a new plant or move an existing one, it pays to spend a few minutes working out which direction your windows face and what kind of light each one actually delivers throughout the day. Once you understand this, you will be able to match plants to spots where they will genuinely flourish rather than just survive.

How to find out which way your windows face

The easiest method is to use a compass app on your smartphone. Stand in the centre of the room, point the phone towards the window, and note the direction. Alternatively, remember that in the UK the sun rises roughly in the east, reaches its highest point in the south, and sets in the west. If your window catches the brightest midday sun, it is almost certainly south-facing. A simple check on a clear day at around noon will tell you a great deal. Once you have identified each window's orientation, you have the foundation for every plant-placement decision in your home.

South-facing windows: bright, direct light

South-facing windows receive the most intense and longest-lasting direct sunlight in the UK, typically offering six or more hours of direct sun on a clear summer day. This makes them ideal for sun-loving plants such as cacti, succulents, pelargoniums, and most herbs including basil, rosemary, and thyme. Be aware that the light is strongest in summer and significantly weaker in winter, so you may need to move plants closer to the glass between October and February. A sheer curtain can also be useful in midsummer to protect plants with thinner leaves from scorching.

East-facing windows: gentle morning light

East-facing windows deliver soft, direct morning sun for roughly two to four hours and then bright indirect light for the rest of the day. This is considered one of the most comfortable light environments for a wide range of popular houseplants. Peace lilies, pothos, spider plants, begonias, and many ferns do very well here. The morning sun is gentle enough that it rarely scorches even delicate foliage, making east-facing windowsills a forgiving spot for beginners to start with.

West-facing windows: warm afternoon light

West-facing windows receive direct afternoon sun, which in summer can be quite warm and intense for two to four hours before the light softens towards evening. Plants that enjoy bright light but are not true desert species tend to do well here, including tradescantia, hoyas, ZZ plants, and many leafy tropicals. The afternoon heat can be a little drying, so check soil moisture slightly more frequently in summer. In winter, west-facing light is considerably reduced, so plants with higher light needs may need supplemental grow lighting during the shorter months.

North-facing windows: low, indirect light

North-facing windows receive no direct sunlight at all in the UK. The light is consistent and diffuse, which suits shade-tolerant plants but rules out anything that needs bright conditions. Cast iron plants, certain ferns such as Boston fern, devil's ivy, and Chinese evergreens are good choices for these spots. Avoid placing succulents, cacti, or flowering plants here, as they will slowly decline without enough light. If a north-facing room is the only space you have, consider a dedicated plant grow light to supplement the natural levels, especially from autumn through to spring.

Distance from the window matters just as much as direction

Light intensity drops off dramatically the further you move from the glass. A plant sitting one metre back from a south-facing window may actually receive less usable light than a plant sitting directly on a north-facing windowsill. As a practical rule, most tropical houseplants prefer to be within one to two metres of a window. Regularly dust the leaves too, as a layer of dust can reduce the amount of light a plant absorbs by a surprising amount. Rotating your plants a quarter turn every week or two also ensures even growth, preventing them from leaning towards the light source.
