Seeing your plant's leaves turn yellow can feel alarming, but it is one of the most common signals a plant sends when something in its environment is off. The tricky part is that yellowing, known scientifically as chlorosis, can be triggered by a surprisingly wide range of causes, from too much water to nutrient deficiencies to pest damage. Before reaching for a quick fix, it is worth taking a moment to look closely at which leaves are affected, how the yellowing appears, and what has recently changed in the plant's care routine. That detective work will save you time and often save the plant.
Overwatering: the most common culprit
Overwatering is responsible for the majority of yellow-leaf cases in houseplants. When roots sit in waterlogged compost, they are starved of oxygen and begin to rot, which means they can no longer transport water and nutrients up into the leaves. The yellowing typically starts with lower, older leaves and the compost will feel persistently damp or smell slightly sour. To check, push your finger about 5 cm into the pot: if it still feels wet several days after watering, you are overwatering. Fix this by allowing the compost to dry out significantly before the next watering, improving drainage by adding perlite to the mix, and ensuring the pot has holes at the bottom. In severe cases, remove the plant from its pot, trim any black or mushy roots with clean scissors, and repot into fresh, well-draining compost.
Underwatering and low humidity
While less common than overwatering, underwatering also causes yellowing, though it usually comes with additional clues. Leaves may feel dry or papery, the compost will be bone dry and pulling away from the edges of the pot, and the plant may also be wilting or dropping leaves. The yellowing tends to start at the leaf tips and edges before spreading inward. The fix is straightforward: water thoroughly until it drains freely from the bottom, then establish a more consistent watering routine. For tropical houseplants such as calatheas, marantas, and ferns, low humidity can compound the problem. Grouping plants together, placing a tray of damp pebbles underneath the pot, or using a room humidifier can all make a real difference.
Nutrient deficiencies
Plants need a range of nutrients to produce chlorophyll, the pigment that keeps leaves green. The pattern of yellowing often tells you which nutrient is lacking. A nitrogen deficiency shows as uniform yellowing starting from the oldest, lowest leaves and moving upward, since the plant redirects nitrogen from old leaves to new growth. An iron or manganese deficiency, by contrast, causes interveinal chlorosis on younger leaves: the leaf tissue between the veins turns yellow while the veins themselves stay green. Magnesium deficiency produces a similar interveinal pattern but on older leaves.
Too much or too little light
Light drives photosynthesis, so getting it wrong will quickly show in the leaves. A plant receiving too little light produces pale, washed-out yellow leaves, often accompanied by leggy, stretched growth as the plant reaches towards the nearest light source. Moving the plant closer to a bright window, or supplementing with a grow light during the darker winter months, usually reverses the problem over several weeks. Too much direct sunlight, particularly on shade-loving plants like peace lilies or ferns, causes a different kind of yellowing: bleached, faded patches or scorched brown edges rather than an even colour change.
Pests and disease
Several common houseplant pests cause yellowing as a side effect of their feeding. Spider mites create a fine, speckled yellow stippling across leaves and often leave a faint webbing on the undersides. Vine weevil larvae attack roots in a similar way to root rot, causing general yellowing and wilting. Scale insects and mealybugs suck sap and excrete a sticky honeydew that can lead to yellowing and mould. Always check the undersides of leaves carefully with a magnifying glass if you suspect pests. Treat spider mites and other sap-suckers with insecticidal soap or neem oil, repeating every five to seven days for three or four rounds to break the life cycle.
Natural ageing and when not to worry
Not all yellow leaves signal a problem. Plants naturally shed their oldest, lowest leaves as they direct energy into new growth. If you notice just one or two yellow leaves near the base of an otherwise healthy, actively growing plant, this is almost certainly normal senescence and nothing to worry about. Simply remove the yellow leaves cleanly at the stem to keep the plant tidy and reduce any risk of fungal issues. Seasonal changes can also trigger a brief flush of yellowing as a plant adjusts to lower light and temperatures in autumn, particularly in plants that are not fully dormant in winter.
