Streptocarpus ionanthus, long known under the genus Saintpaulia, is a compact, rosette-forming perennial native to the cloud forests of Tanzania and Kenya, particularly the Usambara Mountains. How to care for African Violet

Light

African violets require bright, indirect light for around 12-16 hours per day. A north- or east-facing windowsill in the UK is usually suitable, as direct summer sun will scorch the delicate leaves. Full-spectrum LED or fluorescent grow lights placed 15-30 cm above the plant are an excellent alternative and allow flowering year-round regardless of the season.

Watering

Watering should keep the compost lightly and evenly moist at all times, but never waterlogged. Bottom-watering is the preferred technique: place the pot in a shallow tray of room-temperature water for 20-30 minutes, then allow excess to drain fully. Cold water applied directly to the leaves causes unsightly pale spots and can lead to rot, so top-watering should always be done carefully at the compost level using tepid water.

Soil and potting

A light, free-draining growing medium is essential. Proprietary African violet compost is suitable, but a peat-free mix of fine coir, perlite, and a small amount of fine bark in roughly equal parts by volume works well. Avoid dense, multi-purpose composts that retain excessive moisture, as these promote root rot. Slightly acidic conditions around pH 6.0-6.5 are ideal.

Feeding

Feed every watering or every 7-14 days during the growing season with a liquid fertiliser formulated for African violets, or a balanced feed (such as 20-20-20) diluted to one quarter of the recommended strength. A slightly higher phosphorus ratio encourages flowering. Reduce feeding frequency in winter when growth slows, and flush the compost with plain water occasionally to prevent salt build-up.

Humidity and temperature

African violets thrive in moderate humidity of 50-70%, which can be challenging in centrally heated homes. Standing the pot on a tray of damp gravel or using a cool-mist humidifier nearby both help, but misting the leaves directly is not recommended as water droplets cause spotting and encourage fungal disease. Temperatures should remain between 18 and 24 C. The plants are sensitive to cold draughts and temperatures below 13 C, which can cause leaf damage and flowering to cease.

Repotting

Repot every 12-18 months or when the plant becomes noticeably pot-bound or the rosette significantly overhangs the pot rim. African violets perform best when slightly snug in their container; a pot diameter roughly one third of the plant's leaf span is a useful guide. Repot into fresh compost at the same depth, taking care not to bury the crown, which readily rots if covered.

Pruning

Remove spent flower stalks at their base using clean scissors or fingers to encourage continuous blooming. Yellowing, damaged, or lower leaves that develop with age should be removed at the petiole to keep the rosette neat and to improve air circulation. If a plant has developed a visible elongated neck over time, it can be repotted deeper or the neck can be carefully trimmed and the plant re-rooted to restore a flat rosette form.

Is African Violet toxic?

Pets: Non-toxic. Streptocarpus ionanthus is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. No toxic compounds have been identified in the plant.
People: Considered non-toxic to humans. Contact with the sap may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals due to the hairy leaf surface, but ingestion is not considered hazardous.

How to propagate

Leaf petiole cutting

Remove a healthy, mature leaf with 3-5 cm of petiole attached using a clean blade. Insert the petiole at a shallow angle into a small pot of barely moist perlite or propagation compost. Cover loosely with a clear bag to retain humidity and place in bright, indirect light at around 21 C. Plantlets should emerge from the base of the petiole within 6-12 weeks.

Division

When a mature plant produces multiple crowns or offsets (suckers), carefully separate them at repotting time, ensuring each division has its own roots. Pot individually and treat as established plants. This is faster than leaf propagation but depends on the plant having produced offsets.

Seed

African violet seed is extremely fine and requires surface-sowing on moist, fine propagation compost without covering. Maintain warmth (around 21-24 C) and high humidity under a cover. Germination takes 2-4 weeks and seedlings are slow to mature; seed propagation is rarely used by home growers but is standard practice in commercial breeding.

Story and origins

The genus name Saintpaulia, under which this plant was long classified, honours Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire, the German colonial official who collected the first specimens in the Usambara Mountains of Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania) in 1892. The current genus name Streptocarpus derives from the Greek 'streptos' (twisted) and 'karpos' (fruit), referring to the characteristically twisted seed capsules found in many members of this genus. The species epithet 'ionanthus' comes from the Greek 'ion' (violet) and 'anthos' (flower), meaning 'with violet-like flowers', which accurately describes the plant's characteristic blooms.

Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire sent seeds and specimens of the plant to his father in Germany in 1892, and the species was formally described and named by the botanist Hermann Wendland the following year. From Germany, the plant spread rapidly to botanical gardens and collectors across Europe. Commercial cultivation took off in the United States from the 1920s and 1930s, where the African Violet Society of America was founded in 1946, and hundreds of cultivars were subsequently bred. The plant became a symbol of domesticity and home gardening particularly in post-war America, and later across Europe. The taxonomic reclassification of all Saintpaulia species into the genus Streptocarpus, published in 2021 as part of a broader revision of Gesneriaceae, was initially controversial among hobbyists and commercial growers, many of whom continue to use the former genus name informally.

Why does my African violet have spots on its leaves?
Pale or white spots on African violet leaves are almost always caused by cold water or water droplets coming into contact with the leaf surface, particularly when the plant is in a warm, bright spot. Always water with room-temperature water and do so from below the pot to keep the foliage dry.
How do I get my African violet to flower again?
