How to care for Alocasia Polly

Light

Alocasia 'Polly' thrives in bright, indirect light and should be positioned near a window with filtered sunlight, such as one with a sheer curtain. Direct sun will scorch the leaves, causing pale, bleached patches, while insufficient light leads to leggy growth and loss of the vivid vein contrast. An east or north-facing windowsill in summer, or a spot a metre or so back from a south-facing window, typically suits it well.

Watering

Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of compost has dried out, then water thoroughly until it drains freely from the pot base. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure; the roots are prone to rot if left sitting in soggy compost. Reduce watering frequency during autumn and winter when the plant enters a semi-dormant phase, and always use room-temperature water to avoid cold shock.

Soil and potting

A free-draining, moisture-retentive mix is ideal. A blend of peat-free houseplant compost with perlite or coarse grit in roughly a 60:40 ratio provides the aeration and drainage the roots require. Alocasias dislike compacted, heavy media; good air circulation around the roots reduces the risk of fungal rot.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month during the active growing season from spring through to early autumn. Do not feed during winter when growth has slowed or stopped, as excess nutrients in the compost can cause root burn. A fertiliser with a balanced NPK or one slightly higher in nitrogen supports healthy leaf production.

Humidity and temperature

Alocasia 'Polly' demands high humidity, ideally above 60%, which is rarely met in an average UK home during winter when central heating dries the air considerably. Misting alone is insufficient; grouping plants together, placing the pot on a pebble tray partially filled with water, or using a humidifier nearby are more reliable methods. Maintain temperatures between 18 and 27 C and keep the plant away from cold draughts, radiators, and air conditioning units, all of which cause stress.

Repotting

Repot in spring every one to two years, or when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes. Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one, as too large a pot increases the risk of waterlogging. Terracotta pots can be beneficial as they allow excess moisture to evaporate through the sides. Handle the roots gently, as they are brittle, and refresh the compost fully at each repotting.

Pruning

Routine pruning is not required. Remove yellowing, damaged, or dead leaves by cutting them cleanly at the base of the petiole using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs. Story and origins

The genus name Alocasia is derived from the Greek 'a', meaning without or away from, combined with 'Colocasia', a closely related genus in the Araceae family, effectively meaning 'not Colocasia'. The species epithet 'amazonica' refers to the Amazon region, though this is misleading as the plant is a cultivated hybrid. The cultivar name 'Polly' is a common diminutive name of uncertain specific origin, likely assigned by the nursery that commercialised the cultivar to make it more marketable.

The Alocasia genus is native to tropical and subtropical Asia and eastern Australia, where many species have long been cultivated for their edible corms and ornamental foliage. The hybrid Alocasia x amazonica was reputedly created by a Miami nurseryman called Salvadore Mauro in the 1950s, though detailed documentation is limited. It gained widespread popularity as a houseplant from the late twentieth century onwards, driven by the global enthusiasm for bold, architectural tropical foliage plants.
