Hippeastrum hybridum is a bulbous flowering plant widely grown as a houseplant for its spectacular trumpet-shaped blooms, which typically appear in winter or spring. The large bulbs produce stout hollow stems reaching 30 to 60 cm tall, each bearing two to four flowers up to 20 cm across in shades of red, pink, white, orange, and bicoloured forms. Although commonly sold under the name 'Amaryllis', the true genus Amaryllis contains only South African species, while Hippeastrum is native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America.

How to care for Amaryllis

Light

During the growing and flowering period, place the plant in a bright position with indirect sunlight, such as a windowsill facing east or west. Direct midday sun can scorch the leaves and cause flower colours to fade prematurely. Once blooming has finished and the leaves are actively growing, maximum bright light encourages the bulb to store sufficient energy for the following season.

Watering

When potting a dry bulb, water sparingly until the first signs of growth appear, then increase watering gradually as the stem elongates. During active growth, water thoroughly whenever the top few centimetres of compost feel dry, allowing excess to drain freely. As the foliage begins to yellow in late summer or early autumn, reduce watering steadily and cease entirely once the leaves have died back, keeping the bulb completely dry throughout its dormant period of six to eight weeks.

Soil and potting

Use a rich, free-draining loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 2 mixed with perlite or coarse grit at a ratio of roughly two parts compost to one part grit. Good drainage is essential because the bulb is prone to rotting if kept in waterlogged conditions. Slightly acidic to neutral pH in the range 6.0 to 7.0 is appropriate.

Feeding

Once the flower stem is clearly visible, begin feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser such as a 10-10-10 formulation every two weeks. After flowering has finished, switch to a high-potassium feed to support leaf growth and encourage the bulb to build up reserves. Continue feeding until the leaves start to die back naturally in late summer, then stop entirely for the dormant period.

Humidity and temperature

Hippeastrum tolerates typical household humidity of around 40 to 60% without difficulty and does not require misting or a humidity tray. During active growth, temperatures of 18 to 23°C are ideal, while cooler conditions of 13 to 16°C will slow growth and extend the blooming period. To initiate dormancy, the bulb benefits from a period at around 10 to 13°C for six to eight weeks; avoid frost at all times.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in autumn, choosing a pot only slightly larger than the bulb, typically leaving about 2 to 3 cm between the bulb and the pot wall. A snug fit encourages flowering. Use fresh loam-based compost and ensure the top third of the bulb sits above the soil surface. After repotting, place in a cool, dry position and withhold water until new growth is visible.

Pruning

Once the flowers fade, cut the spent flower stem down to within a few centimetres of the bulb nose, taking care not to damage any emerging foliage. Do not remove the leaves, as they are essential for photosynthesis and replenishing the bulb for the next flowering cycle. Allow the leaves to die back completely and naturally before trimming them away at the end of the growing season.

Is Amaryllis toxic?

Pets: Toxic. All parts of Hippeastrum, particularly the bulb, contain lycorine and other phenanthridine alkaloids. According to ASPCA classifications, Hippeastrum is toxic to cats and dogs; ingestion can cause vomiting, depression, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, anorexia, and tremors. Keep bulbs and plants out of reach of all pets.
People: The bulb and sap contain lycorine, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping if ingested. Skin contact with the sap may cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals. Children should be kept away from bulbs. Seek medical advice if ingestion is suspected.

Common problems

Bulb soft and rotting at the base
Likely cause: Root rot caused by overwatering or poor drainage, often involving Fusarium fungi  Fix: Remove the bulb from the pot, cut away all soft and discoloured tissue with a clean sharp knife, dust the cuts with powdered sulphur or fungicide, allow to dry for a day or two, then repot in fresh free-draining compost. Improve watering habits going forward.
Red or orange streaks and lesions on the leaves and bulb scales
Likely cause: Amaryllis red blotch, also known as red fire, caused by the fungus Stagonospora curtisii  Fix: Remove and dispose of all affected tissue and leaves. Apply a systemic fungicide containing thiophanate-methyl or a copper-based preparation. Avoid wetting the bulb surface when watering and improve air circulation around the plant.
Flower buds appearing but failing to open, or stem collapsing
Likely cause: Insufficient water when the stem is elongating, or cold draughts causing bud blast  Fix: Ensure regular watering once the stem is actively growing and position the plant away from cold windows and draughts. Moving to a consistently warm spot at around 20°C usually allows remaining buds to develop normally.
White, waxy, cottony deposits in leaf axils or at the bulb neck
Likely cause: Mealybugs feeding on plant sap  Fix: Remove visible insects with a cotton swab dipped in 70% rubbing alcohol. For heavier infestations, apply an insecticidal soap solution or neem oil, repeating every seven to ten days until the pest is eliminated.
Yellow or pale foliage with fine webbing on undersides of leaves
Likely cause: Red spider mite infestation, typically worsened by hot, dry indoor conditions  Fix: Increase humidity around the plant and wash the leaves with a damp cloth to remove mites mechanically. Apply an acaricide or insecticidal soap, repeating at weekly intervals for three to four weeks.
Failure to flower after the dormant period
Likely cause: Insufficient dormancy period, inadequate feeding during the previous growing season, or bulb too small  Fix: Ensure a strict cool, dry dormancy of six to eight weeks. Feed consistently during the leaf growth phase in the preceding season with a high-potassium fertiliser. Offset bulbs smaller than 5 cm in diameter may not yet be large enough to flower.

How to propagate

Offset division

Small daughter bulblets form at the base of the parent bulb and can be gently separated when repotting, ensuring each offset has some roots attached. Pot them individually in small containers with loam-based compost and grow on for two to four years until they reach flowering size.

Twin scaling

A dormant bulb is cut vertically into sections, each containing a portion of the basal plate, and each section is further divided into pairs of scales still connected at the base. The twin-scale cuttings are dusted with fungicide and placed in a barely moist perlite and vermiculite mix at around 20°C; small bulblets typically form at the base of each cutting within eight to twelve weeks.

Seed

Fresh seed, produced by hand-pollinating flowers and harvested when the seed pod splits, can be sown on the surface of a well-draining seed compost at 21 to 24°C. Germination usually occurs within two to four weeks, but seedlings take three to five years to reach flowering size and will not breed true to the parent cultivar.

Native to tropical and subtropical South America, particularly Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina.

Story and origins

The genus name Hippeastrum is derived from the Greek words 'hippeus' meaning horseman or knight, and 'astron' meaning star, giving the approximate meaning of 'knight's star' or 'horseman's star'. The name was formally published by the English botanist William Herbert in his 1821 work on the Amaryllidaceae family. The common name 'Amaryllis' used in the horticultural trade is borrowed from the genus Amaryllis, which itself derives from the Greek word 'amaryssein', meaning to sparkle or shine, and was also used as a name for a shepherdess in the pastoral poetry of Theocritus and Virgil.

Hippeastrum species were first described by European botanists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries following the Spanish colonisation of South America, with early specimens sent to botanical gardens in Spain and the Netherlands. Serious hybridisation began in the early nineteenth century, particularly through the work of Arthur Johnson, a watchmaker in Lancashire who produced one of the first recorded hybrids around 1799, later named Hippeastrum x johnsonii. The Dutch bulb industry began large-scale commercial production of hybrid cultivars in the twentieth century, and the plant became a popular winter-flowering gift bulb across Europe and North America. In parts of South America, wild Hippeastrum species are associated with the landscape of the cerrado and Atlantic forest regions and hold cultural significance as symbols of the natural heritage of countries such as Brazil.

Why has my amaryllis not flowered again this year?
The most common reason is that the bulb was not given adequate light and feeding during the leaf growth phase after the previous flowering. The leaves photosynthesise and rebuild the bulb's energy reserves; without consistent bright light and fortnightly high-potassium feeding throughout summer, the bulb cannot store enough resources to initiate flower buds. A proper cool, dry dormancy period of six to eight weeks is also necessary to trigger blooming.
Do I need to repot my amaryllis every year?
No. Hippeastrum actually performs best when slightly pot-bound, so repotting every two to three years is sufficient. Repot only when the roots are visibly crowding the pot or the bulb has produced several large offsets. Use a pot only marginally larger than the bulb, leaving roughly 2 to 3 cm between the bulb and the rim.
Should I cut off the leaves after flowering?
No. The leaves must remain on the plant until they die back naturally, typically in late summer or early autumn. They are essential for producing the energy the bulb needs for its next flowering cycle. Only remove leaves once they have turned fully yellow and dried out.
Can I grow amaryllis outdoors in the UK?
Hippeastrum hybrids are frost-tender and cannot be left outside year-round in the UK. They can be placed outdoors in a sheltered, sunny spot from late spring to early autumn, which benefits leaf growth and bulb development. They must be brought back indoors before temperatures drop below around 10°C in autumn.
How do I get my amaryllis bulb to flower at Christmas?
To time flowering for Christmas, end the dormant period and begin watering a newly purchased or resting bulb approximately eight to ten weeks before Christmas, so around mid-October. Place it in a warm position at around 20 to 22°C. Pre-prepared bulbs sold in shops in October and November have often been treated to accelerate growth and are designed to flower within six to eight weeks of planting.
Is it normal for the flower stem to appear before any leaves?
Yes, this is entirely normal for Hippeastrum. In most cultivars the flower stem emerges first, often before any leaf growth is visible, because the flowering mechanism is driven by temperature and the stored energy in the bulb rather than by active photosynthesis. Leaves typically follow shortly after or alongside the developing stem.
My amaryllis bulb feels soft. Is it dead?
A bulb that is uniformly soft throughout, with mushy or discoloured tissue, is likely suffering from rot and may not be salvageable. However, if only the outer scales are slightly soft or papery while the inner bulb remains firm, it may still be viable. Remove any damaged tissue, allow the cut surfaces to dry, dust with fungicide, and repot in fresh dry compost, withholding water until new growth appears.
