Anthurium clarinervium is a Mexican epiphytic species native to the limestone karst forests of Chiapas, where it grows in shaded, humid conditions on rocky outcrops and cliff faces. It is prized as a houseplant primarily for its large, dark green, velvety leaves that display a striking pattern of pale cream or silvery white veins. The plant is a slow to moderate grower and belongs to the Cardiolonchium section of the genus, distinguished by its thick, heart-shaped foliage rather than showy spathe flowers.

Anthurium clarinervium thrives in bright, indirect light that mimics the dappled canopy shade of its native forest habitat. An east- or north-facing windowsill is ideal; a west- or south-facing window works well if the plant is set back from the glass or shielded by a sheer curtain. Direct sunlight will scorch the velvety leaf surface, causing bleached patches or crispy edges, while insufficient light leads to slow growth and increasingly small new leaves.
Allow the top 2-3 cm of the growing medium to dry out before watering thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain freely from the pot. In winter or in lower light conditions, watering frequency should be reduced considerably. This species is susceptible to root rot if left sitting in soggy soil, so consistent moisture without waterlogging is the goal. Always use water that has been allowed to sit overnight or use filtered or rainwater, as the plant can be sensitive to high chlorine and fluoride levels.
A chunky, fast-draining aroid mix is essential. A suitable blend combines orchid bark, perlite, and a small proportion of peat-free compost or coco coir in roughly equal parts. This replicates the loose, organic debris found in rock crevices in its natural habitat and ensures excellent aeration around the roots while still retaining some moisture. Avoid standard peat-heavy potting composts, which compact over time and retain too much water.
Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser at half the recommended strength once a month during the active growing season from spring through to early autumn. A formulation with a roughly equal NPK ratio, or one slightly higher in nitrogen, supports healthy foliage development. Do not feed in winter when growth slows, as unused nutrients can accumulate in the soil and cause root burn. Flushing the soil with plain water every few months helps prevent salt build-up.
Anthurium clarinervium requires relatively high humidity, ideally between 60 and 80%, to perform well and prevent leaf edge browning. A pebble tray filled with water, a room humidifier, or grouping plants together can all raise ambient moisture levels; misting is less effective and can promote fungal issues if the foliage stays wet. Temperature should remain between 18 and 27 C year-round. The plant cannot tolerate frost or prolonged cold below 15 C, and should be kept away from cold draughts, air-conditioning vents, and radiators.
Repot every one to two years or when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes, moving up only one pot size at a time to avoid excess soil retaining moisture around a small root ball. Spring is the best time to repot. Choose a pot with generous drainage holes; terracotta pots are particularly beneficial as they allow the growing medium to breathe and dry more evenly. Handle the fleshy roots carefully during repotting, as they break easily.
Minimal pruning is required. Remove yellowing or dead leaves at the base by cutting cleanly with sterilised scissors or secateurs to keep the plant tidy and to prevent any potential spread of disease. Spent flower spathes and spadices can be cut off once they have faded. Do not remove healthy green leaves unnecessarily, as this can stress the plant and slow growth.
Take a cutting that includes at least one node and one leaf, allow the cut end to callous for 30-60 minutes, then place it in moist sphagnum moss or a chunky aroid mix. Keep humidity high and temperatures around 22-25 C; roots typically develop within four to eight weeks.
When repotting a mature plant that has produced offsets or multiple stems, carefully separate the rooted sections by hand or with a clean, sterile blade and pot each division into its own container with fresh aroid mix. This is the most reliable method and causes the least stress to the plant.
Seeds can be harvested from the mature berry-like fruits on the spadix and sown fresh on the surface of moist sphagnum moss or seed compost, kept warm and humid. Germination is slow and variable, and the resulting seedlings take several years to mature; this method is rarely practical outside botanical or specialist settings.

The genus name Anthurium derives from the Greek words 'anthos' meaning flower and 'oura' meaning tail, a reference to the elongated spadix characteristic of the genus. The specific epithet clarinervium comes from the Latin 'clarus', meaning clear or bright, and 'nervium', referring to the veins of the leaf. Together, the name describes the plant's most distinctive feature: its clearly defined, brightly contrasting leaf venation.
Anthurium clarinervium was formally described by the Mexican-Chilean botanist Enid Matuda in 1950, based on specimens collected from the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico. Although it had likely been known to local communities for considerably longer, it remained relatively obscure in horticulture until the global surge in houseplant popularity during the 2010s, when velvet-leaved aroids became highly sought after. Its dramatic foliage made it a centrepiece of the aroid collecting community, and demand pushed prices to considerable heights before tissue culture and wider cultivation made it more accessible. It has no significant cultural or medicinal history outside of botanical interest.
A name sometimes used by collectors to refer to forms with exceptionally bright, broad white veining, though this is not a formally accepted cultivar name.
Collectors occasionally select and propagate individuals with particularly large foliage; these are not named cultivars but are traded as premium specimens.
