Syngonium podophyllum is a fast-growing, evergreen aroid native to tropical rainforests from Mexico through Central America to northern South America. It is widely cultivated as a houseplant for its distinctively arrow-shaped juvenile leaves, which broaden and become lobed with age. Foliage colour ranges from deep green to cream, pink, bronze and variegated forms depending on cultivar.

How to care for Arrowhead Plant

Light

Syngonium podophyllum thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates moderate shade better than most aroids. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the foliage and fades variegation. Heavily variegated cultivars require more light than solid green forms to maintain their colouring. Very low light causes the plant to revert toward plain green and results in leggy, weak growth.

Watering

Allow the top 2.5 cm of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly, then drain completely to prevent waterlogging. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter when growth slows. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure; the roots are susceptible to rot if the mix remains saturated. Use room-temperature water and, if your tap water is heavily chlorinated, allow it to stand overnight before use.

Soil and potting

A loose, well-draining aroid mix is ideal. A suitable home blend can be made from peat-free compost, perlite and orchid bark in roughly equal parts. Good aeration around the roots discourages rot while retaining sufficient moisture. Avoid dense, water-retentive mixes such as pure multipurpose compost.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser at half the recommended dose once a month during spring and summer. Feeding is not necessary through autumn and winter unless the plant is in active growth under supplemental lighting. Excess fertiliser causes salt build-up in the soil, which can scorch root tips and cause leaf-tip browning.

Humidity and temperature

This species originates in humid tropical environments and prefers relative humidity of 50% or above. Group plants together, place the pot on a pebble tray with water, or use a room humidifier to raise humidity. Temperatures between 18 and 29°C suit the plant well; it should not be exposed to temperatures below 15°C, and cold draughts from windows or air-conditioning units cause leaf damage and slowed growth.

Repotting

Repot every one to two years in spring when roots begin to circle the base of the pot or emerge from the drainage holes. Move up only one pot size at a time, as oversized pots retain excess moisture and increase the risk of root rot. Refresh the potting mix at each repotting, removing any dead or rotting roots before planting. Terracotta pots aid drainage but require more frequent watering than plastic or glazed ceramic.

Pruning

Regular pruning keeps the plant bushy and compact; without it, Syngonium becomes vining and the lower leaves may be shed. Pinch or cut back the growing tips in spring to encourage branching. Remove any yellowing, damaged or adult-form leaves that detract from appearance. As the plant matures it produces longer, climbing stems; these can be trained up a moss pole to encourage the larger, lobed adult leaf form, or trimmed back to maintain a tidier appearance.

Is Arrowhead Plant toxic?

Pets: Toxic. Classified as toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. All parts of the plant contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested. The sap can also cause skin and eye irritation on contact.
People: Toxic if ingested, causing the same oral irritation from calcium oxalate crystals. The sap may cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals; wear gloves when pruning or handling cut stems.

How to propagate

Stem cuttings in water or moist medium

Take a cutting just below a node, ensuring at least one node is present, and remove any leaves that would be submerged. Place in water or moist perlite in a warm, bright spot; roots typically develop within two to four weeks.

Division

At repotting time, carefully separate rooted offsets or basal shoots from the parent plant and pot them individually into fresh, moist mix. This method works well when the plant has produced multiple stems from the base.

Story and origins

The genus name Syngonium is derived from the Greek words 'syn', meaning together or united, and 'gone', meaning seed or reproductive organ, referring to the fused ovaries characteristic of the genus. The species epithet 'podophyllum' comes from the Greek 'podos', meaning foot, and 'phyllon', meaning leaf, alluding to the broad, foot-like lobed shape of the mature leaves. The common name 'Arrowhead Plant' directly describes the distinctive triangular, arrowhead-shaped appearance of the juvenile foliage.

Syngonium podophyllum was formally described by the German botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1832, based on specimens collected from tropical Central America. It was introduced to European horticulture during the nineteenth century as interest in tropical foliage plants grew among collectors and botanical gardens. Throughout the twentieth century it became a fixture of homes and offices, aided by its tolerance of indoor conditions and its attractive, varied foliage. In parts of Asia and the Pacific, the plant carries symbolic associations with the five elements, particularly when its juvenile five-lobed adult leaves are involved, and it is integrated into Feng Shui practice as a plant believed to bring positive energy.

Why are the leaves of my Arrowhead Plant turning yellow?
Yellowing leaves are most often caused by overwatering. Check that the soil is not remaining soggy between waterings, ensure the pot has drainage holes, and let the top 2.5 cm of mix dry out before watering again. Nutrient deficiency or very low light can also cause yellowing, though these are less common causes.
Can Syngonium podophyllum be grown in water permanently?
It can survive in water for a period, and cuttings root readily in water, but long-term growth in water alone is not ideal. The plant will eventually become nutrient-deficient without liquid fertiliser added to the water, and the roots that form in water differ structurally from soil roots, making later transition to soil difficult.
Why is my plant losing its variegation and turning plain green?
Reverting toward solid green is typically a response to insufficient light. Variegated forms require more light energy than green forms to maintain their patterning. Move the plant to a brighter position with good indirect light. In some cases, individual stems revert spontaneously; these can be pruned back to encourage variegated regrowth.
Is the Arrowhead Plant safe to keep around children?
It is not considered safe for young children. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals, which cause painful irritation to the mouth, throat and digestive system if chewed or swallowed. Keep the plant out of reach of young children and wash hands after handling cut stems.
