Musa acuminata is the primary ancestor of the cultivated edible banana and one of the most widely grown fruiting plants in the world. As a houseplant, it is valued for its large, paddle-shaped leaves and rapid, dramatic growth, giving interiors a bold tropical appearance. Most indoor specimens are compact cultivars, as the full species can exceed 5 metres in height under ideal conditions.

Musa acuminata requires as much bright light as possible indoors. A south- or west-facing window is ideal; the plant benefits from several hours of direct sun each day. In lower light conditions growth slows considerably and leaves may become pale. Outdoors in summer, a sheltered, sunny position encourages vigorous growth, but move the plant back indoors before temperatures drop below 15 C.
Water thoroughly when the top 2 to 3 cm of compost feel dry, ensuring excess drains freely. The pseudostem holds moisture, so waterlogging is the most common cause of root rot. Reduce watering frequency in winter when growth slows, but never allow the rootball to dry out completely. Use lukewarm water where possible, as cold water can shock the roots.
A rich, moisture-retentive but free-draining compost is essential. A mix of peat-free multipurpose compost, perlite, and well-rotted organic matter in roughly equal thirds works well. Good aeration around the roots helps prevent fungal problems. A slightly acidic to neutral pH of 5.5 to 7.0 is preferred.
Feed every two weeks during the growing season from spring through to late summer using a balanced liquid fertiliser high in potassium. A fertiliser formulated for fruiting or tropical plants is suitable. Reduce feeding to once a month in autumn and stop entirely in winter. Over-fertilising can cause leaf tip scorch.
Musa acuminata thrives in high humidity, ideally between 60 and 80 per cent. Indoors, mist the leaves regularly, place the pot on a tray of damp pebbles, or use a humidifier nearby. Central heating dries the air considerably and will cause leaf edges to brown. Temperatures should remain between 18 and 30 C; avoid cold draughts, sudden temperature drops, and positions near radiators.
Repot in spring every one to two years, or when roots begin to emerge from drainage holes. Move up one pot size at a time, using fresh compost. Large specimens can be top-dressed annually rather than fully repotted. When repotting, take care not to damage the rhizome and any developing offsets. A heavy pot helps stabilise the top-heavy plant.
Remove lower leaves as they yellow and die back naturally using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs. After the parent plant has flowered and fruited, it will not flower again; cut the exhausted pseudostem down to the base to allow offsets to take over. Wipe large leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and help them photosynthesise efficiently.
Offsets, known as pups or suckers, emerge from the base of the parent plant. Wait until a pup is at least 30 cm tall and has developed its own roots, then carefully separate it from the rhizome with a clean, sharp knife and pot it individually in moist compost.
When repotting, the rhizome can be divided into sections, each bearing at least one growth point. Allow cut surfaces to callous for a day before potting into fresh compost to reduce the risk of rot.

The genus name Musa was given by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and is generally believed to honour Antonio Musa, physician to the Roman emperor Augustus, though some scholars suggest it derives from the Arabic word 'mauz' or 'mawz', meaning banana. The species epithet acuminata comes from the Latin 'acuminatus', meaning tapering to a point, referring to the pointed tip of the banana fruit or leaf.
Musa acuminata originated in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific, with wild populations native to areas including the Malay Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia. Cultivation began thousands of years ago in New Guinea, making it one of the earliest plants domesticated by humans. It spread westward through trade routes across Asia, the Middle East, and eventually into Africa and the Americas following European colonisation in the 15th and 16th centuries. In many cultures the banana plant holds spiritual and ceremonial significance; in Hinduism and Buddhism it is associated with prosperity and is commonly offered in religious rituals. Its rapid global spread made it one of the most important food crops in history.
