Codiaeum variegatum is a tropical evergreen shrub native to the western Pacific islands, Malaysia, and northern Australia, widely grown as a houseplant for its strikingly coloured foliage. Leaves vary enormously in shape and colouration, displaying combinations of green, yellow, orange, red, and near-black, often on a single plant. In its native habitat it can reach 3 metres tall, though container-grown specimens indoors typically remain under 1 metre.

How to care for Croton

Light

Crotons require very bright light to maintain their vivid leaf colours. A south- or east-facing windowsill that receives several hours of direct or strong indirect sunlight each day is ideal. In poor light the foliage reverts towards plain green and the plant becomes leggy. Avoid harsh midday sun through glass in summer, which can scorch leaves, but generally err on the side of more light rather than less.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top 2 cm of compost has dried out, then allow excess to drain freely. Crotons dislike both waterlogged compost, which causes root rot, and prolonged dryness, which triggers rapid leaf drop. Use tepid water where possible, as cold water can shock the roots. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter when growth slows, but never allow the compost to dry out completely.

Soil and potting

A rich but free-draining compost is essential. A blend of good-quality peat-free potting compost with added perlite or coarse grit at roughly 3:1 improves drainage and aeration. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0 to 7.0) suits the plant well. Heavy or compacted compost that retains excess moisture greatly increases the risk of root rot.

Feeding

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to the manufacturer's recommended strength every two to four weeks from early spring through to early autumn. No feeding is needed during winter when growth is minimal. Over-feeding can lead to salt build-up in the compost; flush the pot through with plain water occasionally to reduce accumulation.

Humidity and temperature

Crotons are tropical plants that need warmth and high humidity year-round. Temperatures below 16 degrees C slow growth and anything below 12 degrees C causes serious damage. Keep plants away from cold draughts, open windows in winter, and unheated rooms. Aim for humidity above 60%; regular misting, a pebble tray with water, or a room humidifier all help. Dry central heating air is a common cause of brown leaf tips and leaf loss.

Repotting

Repot in spring when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or growth noticeably slows, usually every two to three years. Move up only one pot size at a time, as excessively large containers hold surplus moisture and invite rot. Handle the roots gently and water well after repotting, keeping the plant in a warm, humid spot to recover. Mature specimens that have reached their desired size can simply be top-dressed with fresh compost instead.

Pruning

Prune in spring to control height and encourage bushier growth. Wear gloves when cutting, as the milky latex sap is a skin and eye irritant. Cut stems just above a leaf node using clean, sharp secateurs. Leggy or bare lower stems can be cut back hard and will usually reshoot if the plant is otherwise healthy and in good growing conditions.

Is Croton toxic?

Pets: Toxic. All parts of Codiaeum variegatum are toxic to dogs and cats according to ASPCA classifications. Ingestion can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and diarrhoea. The milky latex sap may also cause skin and eye irritation on contact.
People: The latex sap is a skin irritant and may cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals; wear gloves when pruning or propagating. Ingestion of plant material can cause gastrointestinal upset. The plant is considered mildly to moderately toxic to humans and should be kept out of reach of young children.

How to propagate

Stem cuttings

Take a cutting 8 to 12 cm long with at least two to three leaves, allow the cut end to dry for 30 minutes to stop latex bleeding, then dip in rooting hormone and insert into moist, free-draining compost. Cover with a clear bag or propagator lid to maintain humidity and place in a warm (22 to 25 degrees C), bright spot; roots typically form within four to eight weeks.

Air layering

Select a healthy stem, remove a ring of bark about 3 cm wide, dust the wound with rooting hormone, wrap the area in damp sphagnum moss, and enclose it tightly in clear polythene. Once roots are visible through the moss, usually after six to ten weeks, cut the stem below the rooted section and pot up as a new plant.

The species epithet variegatum is a Latin adjective meaning variegated or of differing colours, referring directly to the plant's most distinctive characteristic, its multi-coloured foliage. The common name 'croton' is a historic misnomer; the true genus Croton is a separate, much larger genus within the same Euphorbiaceae family, and the confusion in naming has persisted in popular usage for many decades.

Codiaeum variegatum was first formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 under the name Croton variegatum, later reclassified into its own genus Codiaeum by the German botanist Adolph Blume in 1825.
