How to care for Dieffenbachia Camille

Light

Dieffenbachia 'Camille' performs best in bright, indirect light, such as a position a metre or two back from a south- or east-facing window. It can adapt to lower light levels but the pale central variegation may become less pronounced and growth will slow considerably. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it will scorch and bleach the delicate cream leaf tissue.

Watering

Allow the top 2-3 cm of compost to dry out before watering thoroughly, then allow excess to drain freely. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline; the roots are susceptible to rot if left sitting in soggy compost. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter when growth slows. Use room-temperature water, and if possible allow tap water to stand overnight to off-gas chlorine.

Soil and potting

A well-draining, moisture-retentive mix is ideal. A peat-free multipurpose compost combined with around 20-30% perlite or coarse horticultural grit works well. Good aeration around the roots discourages waterlogging and rot. Avoid heavy, compacted compost mixes.

Feeding

Feed monthly during the active growing season (April to September) with a balanced, water-soluble liquid fertiliser diluted to the manufacturer's recommended strength. A formulation with an NPK ratio around 20-20-20 or one slightly higher in nitrogen supports the lush foliage. Do not feed in autumn or winter when the plant is resting.

Humidity and temperature

Dieffenbachia 'Camille' prefers temperatures between 16°C and 27°C and dislikes cold draughts, air conditioning vents, or temperatures below 13°C. A humidity level of 50% or above is preferred; in centrally heated homes, grouping plants together, placing the pot on a tray of damp pebbles, or using a room humidifier will help maintain adequate moisture in the air. Misting can be done but is less effective than these alternatives.

Repotting

Repot every one to two years in spring, moving up by one pot size (typically 2-4 cm in diameter) when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or circle visibly in the pot. Avoid excessively large pots as these hold more moisture than the roots can take up, increasing the risk of root rot. Refresh the compost at each repotting.

Pruning

Pruning is mainly carried out to remove yellowing, damaged, or dying lower leaves, which naturally shed as the plant matures and the stem elongates. Cut leaves cleanly at the base of the petiole using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs. Wear gloves when pruning as the sap is irritating to skin and mucous membranes. If the plant becomes leggy, stems can be cut back to encourage bushier regrowth.

Is Dieffenbachia Camille toxic?

Pets: Toxic. All parts of Dieffenbachia contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and proteolytic enzymes. Ingestion by cats, dogs, or other pets can cause intense oral irritation, excessive drooling, swelling of the mouth and throat, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. How to propagate

Stem cuttings

Cut a section of stem with at least one node, allow the cut end to dry for a few hours, then place in moist perlite or water. Roots should develop within four to six weeks in warm, humid conditions.

Stem section (cane) cuttings

A bare, leafless stem can be cut into sections of around 5-8 cm, each containing at least one node, and laid horizontally half-buried in moist compost. New shoots will emerge from the nodes within several weeks.

Division

When repotting, offsets or basal shoots that have developed their own root systems can be carefully separated from the parent plant and potted individually into fresh compost.
