How to care for Gasteria

Light

Gasteria bicolor is unusually tolerant of low light by succulent standards, making it suitable for positions away from a sunny windowsill. It performs best in bright indirect light, such as near a north- or east-facing window, and will manage in moderate shade. Direct midday summer sun can scorch the leaves, causing pale, papery patches, so filtered light or a position set back from a south-facing window is preferable.

Watering

Water thoroughly during the growing season (spring through early autumn), then allow the compost to dry out almost completely before watering again. In winter, reduce watering to once every four to six weeks. Gasteria bicolor is highly susceptible to root rot if left in standing water or overly moist compost, so always use a pot with drainage holes and empty saucers promptly.

Soil and potting

A free-draining compost is essential. A proprietary cactus and succulent mix is suitable, or you can improve standard peat-free compost by adding approximately 50 per cent horticultural grit or perlite. Good drainage prevents the root rot to which this species is prone. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0 to 7.0) is ideal.

Feeding

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength, or use a specialist succulent fertiliser with a low nitrogen content. Feeding is not necessary in autumn and winter when the plant is resting. Over-feeding can cause soft, vulnerable growth and a build-up of salts in the compost.

Humidity and temperature

Gasteria bicolor is well adapted to the dry air found in most homes and does not require additional humidity. It prefers temperatures between 10 and 27 C and should not be exposed to frost, as it will tolerate brief cold but is not fully hardy outdoors in the UK. Keep it away from cold draughts and heating vents, both of which can stress the plant.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in spring, or when the plant becomes noticeably pot-bound or offset clumps fill the container. Move up one pot size at a time using fresh succulent compost. Gasteria bicolor tends to flower and grow better when mildly root-bound, so there is no need to rush repotting. Terra cotta pots are preferred as they allow the compost to dry more quickly.

Pruning

Gasteria bicolor requires minimal pruning. Remove any dead or shrivelled outer leaves at the base by pulling gently or cutting close to the stem with clean, sharp scissors. Spent flower stalks can be cut back at the base once flowering has finished. No other routine pruning is necessary.

Is Gasteria toxic?

Pets: Non-toxic. Gasteria species are not listed as toxic to cats or dogs by the ASPCA. They do not contain the saponins found in aloes in significant quantities and are generally regarded as safe around pets. However, consumption of plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset due to the fibrous, mucilaginous gel within the leaves.
People: Considered non-toxic to humans. The leaf gel has occasionally been used as a topical soothing agent in traditional settings, though it is not equivalent to Aloe vera gel and internal consumption is not recommended.

Common problems

Soft, mushy base or roots
Likely cause: Root rot caused by overwatering or poor drainage  Fix: Remove the plant from the pot, cut away any blackened roots, allow to dry for a day or two, then repot in fresh dry succulent compost. Reduce watering frequency significantly.

How to propagate

Offsets (pups)

Gasteria bicolor freely produces offsets around the base of the mother plant. Once these have developed a few leaves and are at least a third the size of the parent, carefully separate them with a clean knife and allow the cut surfaces to callous for a day before potting into fresh succulent compost.

Leaf cuttings

Remove a healthy, mature leaf cleanly from the base and allow the cut end to dry for two to three days. Lay the leaf horizontally on the surface of barely moist succulent compost or insert the base shallowly into the mix. Small plantlets should emerge from the base of the leaf over several weeks to months, though success rates can vary.

The genus name Gasteria was coined by the French botanist Adrian Haworth in 1821, derived from the Greek word 'gaster' meaning stomach. This refers to the distinctive swollen, stomach-like base of the tubular flowers, which distinguishes the genus from the closely related Aloe and Haworthia. The species epithet 'bicolor' is straightforward Latin meaning 'two-coloured', describing the two-toned appearance of the leaves, which typically display contrasting bands or spots of lighter and darker green.

Gasteria bicolor was formally described from specimens collected in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, a region extraordinarily rich in succulent flora. European botanists and plant collectors became interested in South African succulents from the late seventeenth century onwards, and gasteria species reached European herbaria and botanic gardens during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Adrian Haworth formalised the genus in his 1821 work on succulent plants. Gasterias have been cultivated as ornamental houseplants in Europe since the Victorian era, valued for their toughness and unusual foliage, and have remained modest but steady fixtures in the trade for indoor succulents.
