How to care for Grape Ivy

Light

Grape ivy performs best in bright, indirect light, such as a position a metre or two back from a south- or west-facing window. It tolerates lower light conditions better than many houseplants, making it suitable for north-facing rooms, though growth will be slower and leaves smaller. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and cause leaf colour to fade.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top third of the compost has dried out, then allow excess water to drain freely. Grape ivy is susceptible to root rot if the compost is kept consistently wet, so never allow the pot to sit in standing water. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter when growth slows, but do not allow the compost to dry out completely.

Soil and potting

Use a well-draining, peat-free multipurpose compost combined with approximately 20 to 30 percent perlite or coarse horticultural grit to improve aeration and prevent waterlogging. A slightly acidic to neutral pH in the range of 6.0 to 7.0 is suitable. Good drainage is the single most important factor, as compacted or moisture-retentive mixes quickly lead to root problems.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser at half to full recommended strength every two to four weeks during the active growing season from spring through to early autumn. A feed with an even NPK ratio, such as 10-10-10, supports healthy foliage and stem development. Cease feeding in late autumn and winter to allow the plant a period of rest.

Humidity and temperature

Grape ivy prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally above 50 percent, which reflects its tropical origins. In centrally heated homes, mist the foliage occasionally, group plants together, or place the pot on a tray of damp gravel to raise local humidity. It grows well between 15 and 27 degrees C and should be protected from temperatures below 10 degrees C and from cold draughts, which can cause leaf drop.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in spring when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or the plant becomes visibly pot-bound. Move up one pot size at a time, typically increasing by 2 to 4 cm in diameter. Refresh the compost fully at repotting to replenish nutrients and improve drainage.

Pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, encourage bushier growth, and remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded stems. Pinching out the growing tips of young shoots regularly throughout the season promotes branching and a fuller appearance. All pruning tools should be clean and sharp to avoid introducing disease.

Is Grape Ivy toxic?

Pets: Mildly toxic. Cissus rhombifolia is listed by the ASPCA as toxic to both dogs and cats. Ingestion may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and general gastrointestinal upset. The toxic compounds are not definitively characterised but the plant should be kept out of reach of pets as a precaution.
People: Not considered seriously toxic to humans, but contact with sap may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Wash hands after handling.

How to propagate

Stem tip cuttings

Take 10 to 15 cm cuttings just below a leaf node in spring or summer, remove lower leaves, and insert into moist perlite or a free-draining cutting compost. Place in a warm position with bright indirect light and maintain humidity with a clear propagator or bag until roots develop, typically within four to six weeks.

Layering

Pin a healthy, flexible stem to the surface of an adjacent pot of compost while it is still attached to the parent plant. Once roots have established at the point of contact, usually within four to eight weeks, sever the stem from the parent plant and grow on independently.

The genus name Cissus derives from the ancient Greek word 'kissos', meaning ivy, reflecting the climbing habit shared with true ivy. The species epithet rhombifolia means 'rhombus-leaved' or 'diamond-leaved', from the Latin 'rhombus' combined with 'folia' meaning leaves, a direct reference to the characteristic rhombus-shaped outline of the individual leaflets. The common name Grape ivy acknowledges both its membership of the Vitaceae (grape) family and its superficially ivy-like trailing and climbing growth form.

Cissus rhombifolia was formally described for science in the nineteenth century and subsequently became established in cultivation as an ornamental climbing plant in Europe and North America. It gained particular popularity as a houseplant during the mid-twentieth century, when trailing and climbing foliage plants were fashionable for offices and public spaces owing to their tolerance of artificial light and variable conditions. The cultivar 'Ellen Danica', selected for its more decorative deeply lobed foliage, became one of the most commercially successful foliage houseplants of the 1970s and 1980s and remained widely available into the twenty-first century.
