In its full, vining form it is a vigorous grower that can produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers under the right conditions, though the single-leaf cuttings sold commercially rarely ever bloom or develop further.

How to care for Hoya Kerrii

Light

Hoya kerrii thrives in bright, indirect light positioned near an east- or west-facing window. It can tolerate a few hours of gentle direct sunlight, particularly in the morning, which encourages compact growth and may stimulate flowering in mature plants. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. In lower light the plant survives but grows very slowly and is unlikely to flower.

Watering

As a semi-succulent, Hoya kerrii stores water in its thick leaves and is highly tolerant of drought. Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to dry out almost completely before watering again. During autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly as the plant's growth slows. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline; soggy soil leads rapidly to root rot. Always check the substrate a few centimetres down before watering.

Soil and potting

A fast-draining, well-aerated potting mix is essential. A blend of standard peat-free houseplant compost with added perlite, coarse horticultural grit, or orchid bark in roughly a 1:1 ratio works well. The roots require good airflow and must never sit in waterlogged conditions. Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive composts designed for tropical foliage plants.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength once a month during the active growing season from spring through to late summer. A formulation with a slightly higher phosphorus content can be used in summer to encourage flowering in mature, established plants. Do not feed during autumn and winter when growth has slowed or ceased.

Humidity and temperature

Hoya kerrii prefers temperatures between 18 and 27 C and should not be exposed to temperatures below 10 C. It tolerates average household humidity reasonably well but benefits from levels of 40-60%. Placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, grouping it with other houseplants, or using a room humidifier can help maintain adequate moisture in the air. Keep it away from cold draughts, radiators, and air-conditioning units.

Repotting

Repot only when the plant has become visibly pot-bound, typically every two to three years for actively growing vines. Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one, as Hoya kerrii blooms more reliably when slightly root-bound. Spring is the best time to repot. Note that single-leaf cuttings sold commercially contain no node and cannot develop into full plants regardless of how they are potted; repotting these will not encourage growth.

Pruning

Pruning is not routinely required for Hoya kerrii. If the vine becomes untidy or excessively long, stems can be trimmed back in spring using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs. Importantly, never remove the short, stubby peduncles (flower spurs) that appear on mature plants, as new flower clusters are produced from the same spur year after year. Removing them will prevent future flowering.

Is Hoya Kerrii toxic?

Pets: Mildly toxic. According to the ASPCA, Hoya kerrii is not listed among the most toxic plants, but Hoya species in general can cause mild gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhoea, if ingested by dogs or cats. The milky latex sap may also cause skin or mouth irritation. Out of caution, the plant should be kept out of reach of pets.
People: Generally considered non-toxic to humans, but the latex sap may cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals. Wash hands after handling.

Yellow, mushy leaves and stem base

How to propagate

Stem tip cuttings

Take a cutting of 10-15 cm that includes at least one or two nodes and a pair of leaves. Allow the cut end to callous for a few hours, then place in a pot of moist perlite or a gritty propagating mix. Keep warm and in bright indirect light; roots typically develop within four to eight weeks.

Water propagation

Place a stem cutting with at least one node into a glass or jar of room-temperature water, ensuring the node is submerged but the leaves are above the waterline. Change the water every few days; roots usually appear within three to five weeks, after which the cutting can be potted into compost.

Layering

Pin a section of a healthy stem, still attached to the parent plant, against a small pot of moist compost so that a node is in contact with the substrate. Once roots have formed at the node, the new plant can be severed from the parent and grown on independently.

Where Hoya Kerrii comes from

Native to southern China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Java (Indonesia).

Story and origins

The genus name Hoya honours Thomas Hoy (c. 1750-1822), head gardener to the Duke of Northumberland at Syon House in Middlesex, England, who was a respected botanist and horticulturist of his day. The genus was named in his honour by the Scottish botanist Robert Brown. The species epithet kerrii commemorates Arthur Francis George Kerr (1877-1942), an Irish-born physician and botanist who worked in Thailand (then Siam) and collected an enormous number of plant specimens throughout Southeast Asia, many of which were new to science.

Hoya kerrii was first collected in northern Thailand by Arthur Kerr and was formally described and named by William Grant Craib in 1911. It is native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphytic or lithophytic climber, anchoring itself to trees or rocky outcrops. The plant became widely known as a gift item in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, particularly in Europe and North America, where nurseries began mass-producing single-leaf cuttings potted in small terracotta pots and marketing them as Valentine's Day gifts. This practice, while commercially successful, has led to widespread misunderstanding about the plant's growth habits, as most buyers are unaware that a nodeless single leaf will never develop further. Among collectors of the broader Hoya genus, the full vining form of H. kerrii is valued for its bold foliage and sweetly scented blooms.

Leaves are edged with creamy white or pale yellow variegation. Requires brighter light than the standard form and grows more slowly due to reduced chlorophyll.
