How to care for Inch Plant

Light

Tradescantia fluminensis grows best in bright, indirect light, such as a position a metre or so back from a south- or east-facing window. It tolerates lower light levels better than many variegated relatives, though growth becomes leggy and the leaves may lose any sheen or subtle variegation in deep shade. Direct summer sun through glass can scorch the foliage, so use a sheer curtain if placing it close to a sunny pane.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top 2 cm of compost feels dry, allowing excess to drain freely from the pot. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure; waterlogged roots rot quickly, particularly in winter when growth slows. Reduce watering frequency from autumn through to late winter, but never allow the compost to dry out completely as the fleshy stems desiccate rapidly.

Soil and potting

A well-draining, peat-free multipurpose compost suits this plant well. Adding roughly 20 to 30 percent perlite or coarse horticultural grit improves drainage and reduces the risk of root rot. Avoid dense, water-retentive mixes, which can suffocate the relatively fine root system.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser at half the manufacturer's recommended strength every two to four weeks from spring through early autumn. Feeding is not necessary in winter when growth has slowed. Excessive feeding encourages lush but weak growth that is more susceptible to pests.

Humidity and temperature

A minimum temperature of 10 degrees C is required; growth is most vigorous between 18 and 24 degrees C. The plant appreciates moderate to high humidity and benefits from misting, grouping with other houseplants, or sitting on a tray of damp pebbles. It dislikes cold draughts and should be kept away from open windows in winter.

Repotting

Repot every one to two years in spring, moving into a pot only one size larger. Tradescantia fluminensis has a relatively modest root system, and oversized pots hold excess moisture that promotes rot. Because the plant grows quickly and becomes untidy, many growers prefer to take cuttings and start fresh rather than repotting ageing specimens.

Pruning

Regular pinching out of stem tips encourages bushy, compact growth and prevents the plant from becoming a long, bare-stemmed tangle. Cut or pinch just above a leaf node. How to propagate

Stem cuttings in water

Prepare cuttings as above and insert several into a small pot of moist, well-draining compost. Keep warm and consistently moist; cuttings usually root within two to three weeks without the need for rooting hormone.

Division

When repotting a mature plant, the root mass can be gently separated into two or more sections, each with stems and a portion of roots attached. Pot each section individually and water in well.

Story and origins

The genus name Tradescantia honours John Tradescant the Elder (c. 1570 to 1638) and his son John Tradescant the Younger (1608 to 1662), who served as royal gardeners to the English Crown and were pioneering plant collectors who introduced numerous species to British horticulture. The species epithet fluminensis derives from the Latin fluminensis, meaning 'of the river' or 'from the river', a reference to the plant's native habitat along riverbanks and moist streamsides in south-eastern Brazil, particularly around the city of Rio de Janeiro (formerly known as Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro).

Tradescantia fluminensis was collected from Brazil and described scientifically in the mid-nineteenth century, though plants within the wider Tradescantia genus had been cultivated in European gardens since the seventeenth century following the Tradescants' collecting expeditions. By the twentieth century it had become a popular trailing houseplant across Europe and North America, valued for its ease of propagation and low demands. Its introduction to temperate regions as an ornamental led to its inadvertent escape into the wild in numerous countries, and it is now recognised as a significant ecological threat in parts of Australasia and South Africa, where it forms dense mats that exclude native ground flora and suppress tree seedling regeneration.
