Nephrolepis obliterata is a robust, upright fern native to eastern Australia and New Guinea, where it grows in humid subtropical and tropical forests. Unlike the closely related Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), its fronds are narrower, more erect and notably tidier in habit, making it well suited to indoor cultivation. It is valued as a houseplant for its lush, arching foliage and its relatively greater tolerance of lower humidity compared with many other ferns.

How to care for Kimberly Queen Fern

Light

Kimberly Queen ferns perform best in bright, indirect light, such as a position near a north- or east-facing window where they receive good ambient brightness without direct sun. Direct sunlight will scorch the fronds and cause them to yellow, while very deep shade leads to weak, sparsely produced fronds. A lightly filtered south- or west-facing spot behind a sheer curtain can also work well, provided the heat is not excessive.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of compost begins to feel dry, ensuring that surplus water drains freely from the pot. The compost should remain evenly moist but must never sit in standing water, as root rot develops quickly in waterlogged conditions. Watering frequency will increase noticeably in warm summer months and should be reduced in winter when growth slows. Use tepid water where possible, as cold water can stress the roots.

Soil and potting

A rich but well-draining, moisture-retentive compost is ideal. A peat-free mix combining general-purpose potting compost with added perlite or coarse grit (roughly 70:30) works well, providing both good aeration and adequate moisture retention. Avoid heavy, compacted mediums, which impede drainage and increase the risk of root rot. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) suits this species.

Feeding

Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser (such as a 20-20-20 formulation at half strength) every two weeks during the active growing season from spring through to late summer. Do not feed during autumn and winter when the plant is not actively growing, as excess fertiliser salts accumulate in the compost and can damage roots. Flush the compost with plain water every few months to prevent salt build-up.

Humidity and temperature

This fern tolerates average household humidity better than many other fern species, but it still thrives when relative humidity is kept at 50% or above. In dry centrally heated homes, grouping plants together, placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water, or using a room humidifier will all help. Temperatures between 15 and 27 C suit it well; it dislikes cold draughts, sudden temperature fluctuations and positions near radiators or air-conditioning vents.

Repotting

Repot in spring every one to two years, or when roots are clearly circling the base of the pot or emerging from drainage holes. Move up only one pot size at a time, as an excessively large pot holds surplus moisture and increases the risk of root rot. Gently tease apart any tightly bound roots before resettling in fresh compost. Terracotta pots are advantageous as they allow better air circulation around the roots than plastic alternatives.

Pruning

Remove dead, yellowed or brown fronds at their base using clean scissors or secateurs, cutting as close to the crown as possible without damaging surrounding growth. Regular removal of spent fronds keeps the plant tidy, improves air circulation and redirects the plant's energy into producing healthy new growth. Avoid cutting back healthy green fronds, as the plant does not readily regrow from cut stems in the same way as some other genera.

Is Kimberly Queen Fern toxic?

Pets: Non-toxic. Nephrolepis obliterata is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is also considered non-toxic to horses. However, ingestion of plant material in large quantities may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset in sensitive individuals.
People: Not considered toxic to humans. Handling the plant occasionally causes mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals due to the fine scales on the fronds; washing hands after handling is advisable.

Division

Runners

Like other Nephrolepis species, Kimberly Queen ferns produce stolons (runners) that can develop into new plantlets. Pin a runner down onto the surface of a small pot of moist compost until the plantlet roots and shows new growth, then sever the runner from the parent plant.

Story and origins

The genus name Nephrolepis is derived from the Greek words 'nephros' (kidney) and 'lepis' (scale), referring to the kidney-shaped indusia that cover the sori on the underside of fertile fronds. The specific epithet obliterata comes from the Latin 'obliteratus', meaning erased or blotted out, and refers to the way the sori appear to have the indusial flap obscured or worn away as the spores mature, a key distinguishing feature from related species.

Nephrolepis obliterata was formally described by the German-British botanist Friedrich Wilhelm Klatt in 1897, though specimens had been collected from Queensland and New Guinea by earlier botanical expeditions. The species was initially little distinguished from the broadly cultivated Boston fern complex, and considerable taxonomic revision was needed to clarify the boundaries between Nephrolepis species. It entered commercial horticulture in the latter half of the twentieth century, with the selection marketed as 'Kimberly Queen' becoming popular in Australia, the United States and, subsequently, Europe during the 1990s and 2000s as an attractive, more manageable alternative to the Boston fern for indoor and patio use.
