Ravenea rivularis is a large, graceful feather palm native to riparian habitats in Madagascar, where it grows along riverbanks and in seasonally flooded areas. In cultivation it is widely sold as a houseplant, valued for its arching, pinnate fronds and upright trunk, though it is notably more challenging to keep indoors than its ubiquitous presence in garden centres might suggest. Outdoors it can reach 20 metres in height, but growth as a houseplant is considerably slower and more modest.

Majesty Palm requires bright light to thrive indoors. Position it as close to a south- or west-facing window as possible, where it can receive several hours of bright indirect light or even some direct sun. Insufficient light is the most common reason the plant declines indoors; low light causes slow growth, yellowing fronds, and increased susceptibility to pests. Outdoors in summer it can be placed in a sheltered spot with morning sun, but acclimatise it gradually to avoid scorch.
Because Ravenea rivularis grows naturally along riverbanks, it requires consistently moist compost. Water thoroughly whenever the top 2 to 3 cm of soil begins to dry out, ensuring excess drains freely from the pot. Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely, as this causes rapid browning of the frond tips. Equally, the plant is sensitive to waterlogging, which leads to root rot; always discard any standing water in the saucer within an hour of watering. Reduce watering frequency slightly in winter when growth slows.
Use a free-draining but moisture-retentive compost. A good mix combines two parts loam-based compost (such as John Innes No. 2) with one part perlite and one part coarse horticultural grit or bark chips. This provides the combination of moisture retention and aeration that the species needs. Avoid heavy, peat-only composts, which tend to become waterlogged and compacted over time.
Feed monthly from April to September using a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to the manufacturer's recommended strength, or use a specialist palm fertiliser that includes magnesium and iron. Palms are prone to micronutrient deficiencies, particularly magnesium, which manifests as yellowing between the veins of older fronds. A magnesium supplement or occasional dose of Epsom salts (1 teaspoon per litre of water) can help address this. Do not feed in autumn or winter.
This species originates from a warm, humid riparian environment and performs best at humidity levels of 50% or above. Indoor central heating produces very dry air that contributes to browning leaf tips. Stand the pot on a tray of damp gravel, group it with other plants, or use a humidifier nearby. Misting provides only temporary relief and can encourage fungal issues if fronds stay wet. Maintain temperatures between 16 and 27 C and avoid placing the plant near cold draughts, open windows in winter, or heating vents.
Repot every two to three years in spring when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or the plant becomes visibly top-heavy. Choose a pot only one size larger, as an oversized pot retains excess moisture and increases the risk of root rot. Handle the root ball gently, as palm roots are brittle and do not regenerate readily when broken. Use fresh compost at repotting and water well afterwards, then avoid feeding for four to six weeks to allow the roots to settle.
Only remove fronds that are fully brown and dead, cutting cleanly at the base of the leaf stalk with sharp, clean secateurs. Never remove green or partially green fronds, as palms cannot regenerate from their central growing tip and depend on their existing fronds for energy. Do not trim brown tips with scissors simply for cosmetic reasons; if browning is extensive, investigate and address the underlying cause such as low humidity, underwatering, or fluoride toxicity.
Sow fresh seeds in a free-draining seed compost at a temperature of around 25 to 28 C, keeping the compost consistently moist. Germination can take several months and is unpredictable; fresh seed yields better results than stored seed.
Ravenea rivularis occasionally produces basal offsets (pups) at the base of a mature plant. These can be carefully separated with a sharp, clean knife when they have developed their own roots, then potted into individual containers. This method is not commonly possible with young houseplant specimens.

The genus name Ravenea honours the French botanist Louis Ravene (1795 to 1871), who contributed to botanical collections in the nineteenth century. The species epithet rivularis derives from the Latin rivulus, meaning a small stream or brook, and refers directly to the plant's natural habitat along watercourses in Madagascar. The common name Majesty Palm is a marketing-driven trade name that became established in the horticultural industry during the latter decades of the twentieth century, reflecting the plant's imposing, ornamental appearance rather than any formal botanical or geographical distinction.
Ravenea rivularis was described formally in the botanical literature in the late nineteenth century as European naturalists were documenting the remarkable and largely endemic flora of Madagascar. It remained a specialist horticultural subject until the 1990s, when the houseplant trade, particularly in the United States, began mass-producing it as an affordable interior palm. Its low initial cost and attractive appearance drove enormous retail sales, though many specimens declined rapidly in unsuitable indoor conditions. Despite its troubled history as a houseplant, it remains one of the most commonly sold palms globally. Its wild populations are increasingly threatened in Madagascar, where deforestation and extraction for the ornamental plant trade have placed it on the IUCN Red List as Endangered.
