The Moon Cactus is a novelty houseplant consisting of a brightly coloured, chlorophyll-deficient mutant form of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii grafted onto a green rootstock cactus, most commonly Hylocereus undatus. Because the coloured scion lacks chlorophyll, it cannot photosynthesise and depends entirely on the rootstock for water and nutrients. The vivid caps appear in shades of red, orange, yellow, and pink, making the plant a popular ornamental despite its relatively short lifespan.

How to care for Moon Cactus

Light

Moon Cacti thrive in bright, indirect light. A position near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. While they can tolerate a small amount of gentle morning sun, prolonged exposure to intense direct sunlight will scorch the coloured scion, causing bleaching and tissue damage. Avoid deep shade, as insufficient light weakens the rootstock and slows growth, reducing the overall vigour of the graft.

Watering

Water sparingly, allowing the top half of the compost to dry out completely between waterings. During the active growing season (spring through summer), water approximately once every one to two weeks depending on temperature and pot size. In autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly to once a month or less. The rootstock is susceptible to root rot if the compost remains wet for extended periods, so always ensure the pot drains freely and never allow the plant to sit in a saucer of standing water.

Soil and potting

Use a proprietary cactus and succulent compost, or mix standard peat-free potting compost with at least 50 per cent perlite or coarse horticultural grit to ensure rapid drainage. Good aeration around the roots is essential because the rootstock is vulnerable to fungal rots in heavy or moisture-retentive media. A slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is appropriate.

Feeding

Feed once a month during spring and summer only, using a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half the manufacturer's recommended strength. A formulation with a lower nitrogen ratio, such as one intended for cacti and succulents, is preferable as excess nitrogen promotes soft, vulnerable growth. Do not feed in autumn or winter when the plant is resting.

Humidity and temperature

Moon Cacti tolerate the low humidity typical of most UK homes and require no additional misting or humidity trays. They prefer temperatures between 15 and 29 degrees C and should be kept away from cold draughts, frost, and temperatures below around 10 degrees C. The rootstock, Hylocereus undatus, is a tropical species and less cold-tolerant than many desert cacti, so winter chilling can cause damage even without frost.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in spring, moving up only one pot size at a time. Because the combined plant is often short-lived due to the rootstock eventually outgrowing the scion, repotting is rarely needed more than once. Use a terracotta pot with at least one drainage hole to aid moisture evaporation. Handle the plant with folded newspaper or thick gloves to protect your hands, though the spines are not particularly vicious.

Pruning

Pruning is not applicable in the traditional sense for Moon Cacti. However, if the rootstock produces offshoots or side shoots, these can be removed with a clean, sharp blade to direct energy towards the graft. Any shrivelled or discoloured tissue on the rootstock should be cut away cleanly and the wound dusted with powdered sulphur or activated charcoal to prevent infection.

Is Moon Cactus toxic?

Pets: Non-toxic. Gymnocalycium mihanovichii and the Hylocereus rootstock are not listed as toxic to cats or dogs by the ASPCA. However, the spines of the rootstock cactus pose a physical injury risk to curious pets.
People: Considered non-toxic to humans. Physical injury from spines is the primary hazard, particularly to young children.

Common problems

Soft, mushy stem at the base of the rootstock
Likely cause: Root or basal rot caused by overwatering or poorly draining compost  Fix: Remove the plant from its pot, cut away all rotten tissue back to healthy growth, dust the wound with sulphur powder, and allow it to callous for several days before repotting in fresh, dry cactus compost. Reduce watering frequency going forward.
Scion (coloured cap) becoming pale or yellowing
Likely cause: Too much direct sunlight causing bleaching, or natural senescence of the grafted scion  Fix: Move the plant to a position with bright but indirect light. If the discolouration accompanies shrivelling, the graft union may be failing and the plant may be nearing the end of its life.
Scion shrivelling or shrinking
Likely cause: Graft union failure, underwatering, or the rootstock becoming unable to sustain the scion  Fix: Check the graft union for any sign of separation or rot. If the union is intact, increase watering slightly. If the union has failed, the scion can be re-grafted onto a fresh, healthy Hylocereus or Pereskiopsis rootstock by a competent grower.

How to propagate

Grafting

This is the only reliable method to produce new Moon Cacti with the coloured scion. A healthy, fast-growing rootstock such as Hylocereus undatus or Pereskiopsis spathulata is cut cleanly across the stem, and a similarly sized offset or seedling of the mutant G. mihanovichii form is placed on top with the vascular bundles aligned. The two halves are held together with rubber bands or grafting tape until the union fuses, which typically takes two to four weeks in warm conditions above 20 degrees C.

Offsets from parent scion

The coloured scion occasionally produces small offsets or pups around its base. These can be carefully detached and used as new scions for grafting onto fresh rootstock, allowing the coloured form to be perpetuated without growing from seed.

Story and origins

The genus name Gymnocalycium is derived from the Greek words 'gymnos' meaning naked and 'kalyx' meaning flower bud or calyx, referring to the smooth, naked, spine-free flower buds that distinguish this genus from many other cacti. The species epithet 'mihanovichii' honours Nicolas Mihanovich, an Austro-Hungarian shipping magnate and patron of botanical exploration in South America who sponsored the expedition during which the species was first collected in the early twentieth century.

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii was first described scientifically in 1905, having been collected in the Gran Chaco region on the border of Paraguay and Argentina. The species belongs to a large South American genus of small, globose cacti appreciated by collectors for their tolerance of lower light conditions relative to many other cacti. The distinctive chlorophyll-free mutant forms known as Moon Cacti were selected and developed by Japanese horticulturists, particularly Eiji Watanabe, from the 1940s onwards. The technique of grafting these mutant plants onto vigorous rootstocks to keep them alive was refined in Japan and the novelty plants became a significant export commodity from the 1970s, spreading into European and North American houseplant markets. Today they are among the most recognisable and widely sold novelty cacti globally, despite their relatively brief lifespan compared with standard cacti.

Why is my Moon Cactus dying after only a year or two?
Moon Cacti are naturally short-lived as grafted plants because the coloured scion and the rootstock grow at different rates. Over time the rootstock often outgrows the scion or the graft union weakens and fails. A lifespan of one to three years is common, though plants kept in optimal conditions can last longer. If the scion is still healthy when the rootstock fails, a skilled grower can re-graft it onto fresh rootstock.
Can I grow a Moon Cactus from seed?
You can germinate seeds from Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, but standard seedlings will be green and lack the vivid colouration that defines a Moon Cactus. The colourful mutant forms occur naturally at a very low frequency and must be vegetatively propagated by grafting to be produced reliably. Seeds from the coloured scion will not reliably produce further coloured offspring.
How much light does a Moon Cactus need?
A Moon Cactus needs bright, indirect light for several hours each day. An east- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. Direct harsh sun, especially through south-facing glass in summer, will scorch and bleach the scion. The rootstock requires adequate light to photosynthesise and sustain both itself and the coloured scion.
Why is the coloured top of my Moon Cactus going pale or white?
Bleaching of the scion is most commonly caused by too much direct sunlight burning the pigmented tissue. Move the plant to a spot with bright but indirect light. In some cases, prolonged fading accompanied by wrinkling indicates that the graft union is deteriorating and the plant may be nearing the end of its life.
Is a Moon Cactus safe to keep around cats and dogs?
The plant is not considered toxic to cats or dogs according to ASPCA classifications. However, the physical spines on the rootstock portion can cause injury to a curious pet, so it is sensible to place the plant out of reach of animals and children.
Can I separate the coloured top from the rootstock and keep it alive on its own?
No. The coloured scion cannot survive independently because it lacks chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesise. Separated from the rootstock, it will exhaust any stored reserves and die within weeks. To preserve the scion, it must be grafted onto a new, healthy rootstock cactus.
My Moon Cactus has never flowered. How do I get it to bloom?
Moon Cacti can flower, producing small pink to magenta tubular blooms from the scion. To encourage flowering, ensure the plant receives bright indirect light, is fed monthly during the growing season, and is given a cool, dry rest period in winter with temperatures around 10 to 15 degrees C and minimal watering. Plants that are stressed by poor conditions or a failing graft are unlikely to flower.
