Phalaenopsis aphrodite is a monopodial epiphytic orchid native to the Philippines and southern Taiwan, where it grows on tree branches in humid, shaded forest environments. It produces arching sprays of broad, flat flowers in white, sometimes with a yellow-and-red patterned lip, lasting several weeks to months. It is one of the parent species most widely used in hybridisation to produce the commercial Phalaenopsis hybrids sold as houseplants worldwide.

Phalaenopsis aphrodite thrives in bright, indirect light, such as an east- or north-facing windowsill, or set back from a south- or west-facing window screened by a net curtain. Direct sun will scorch the broad, fleshy leaves, causing brown patches. Low light reduces flowering and can weaken the plant over time, so if natural light is insufficient, a dedicated grow light placed 30-45 cm above the foliage works well.
Water by soaking the pot thoroughly, allowing all excess to drain away completely, then wait until the potting medium has almost dried out and the roots visible through a clear pot have turned silvery-white before watering again. Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot in this species. Tap water at room temperature is acceptable, though rainwater or filtered water is preferable. Avoid letting water pool in the crown of the plant, as this encourages bacterial rot.
A coarse, bark-based orchid compost is essential, as the roots require excellent aeration and drainage. A standard mix of medium-grade pine bark, perlite, and horticultural charcoal in roughly 3:1:1 proportions is suitable. Never use standard houseplant potting compost, as it retains too much moisture and will suffocate the roots. Transparent or semi-transparent pots are useful, as they allow you to monitor root health and moisture levels.
Feed with a balanced orchid fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength approximately every two weeks during the main growing season (spring through early autumn). Reduce feeding to once a month in winter. A formula higher in potassium and lower in nitrogen can be used when a flower spike is developing to support blooming. Flush the potting medium with plain water every fourth watering to prevent salt accumulation.
Phalaenopsis aphrodite prefers temperatures between 18 and 28°C during the day, with a night-time drop of around 5°C, which is beneficial for initiating flower spikes. It will tolerate a minimum of around 15°C but should not be exposed to temperatures below 12°C. Humidity of 50-70% is ideal; in centrally heated homes, placing the pot on a tray of damp expanded clay pebbles or using a room humidifier helps maintain adequate moisture in the air. Avoid placing the plant near radiators, air conditioning vents, or draughty windows.
Repot every one to two years, or when the roots are visibly escaping the pot, the bark has decomposed into a fine compost, or the plant has outgrown its container. The best time to repot is just after flowering has finished and before the next growth phase begins, typically in spring. Move up only one pot size, as Phalaenopsis roots prefer a snug environment. Trim any dead or rotting roots with clean scissors, dust the cut ends with sulphur powder or activated charcoal to reduce infection risk, and settle the plant into fresh bark mix.
Once all flowers on a spike have dropped, you have two options. Cutting the spike back to the base encourages the plant to put energy into root and leaf growth before producing a new spike. Alternatively, trimming the spike just above a visible node below the lowest flower may prompt a secondary branching spike within a few months, though the resulting flowers are often smaller. If the spike turns yellow or brown, always remove it at the base. Use clean, sharp scissors or a blade and avoid tearing the tissue.
Phalaenopsis aphrodite occasionally produces keikis, small plantlets that develop from nodes along the flower spike or at the base. Allow the keiki to develop its own roots of at least 3-5 cm in length before detaching it with a clean blade and potting it into a small pot of fresh orchid bark mix.
Unlike sympodial orchids, Phalaenopsis does not produce pseudobulbs, so traditional division is not applicable. However, if a plant produces multiple growth points at the base, these can occasionally be separated during repotting, provided each division retains healthy roots.

The genus name Phalaenopsis is derived from the Greek words 'phalaena', meaning moth, and 'opsis', meaning appearance or resemblance, referring to the supposed moth-like appearance of the flowers. The species epithet aphrodite honours Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure, alluding to the elegant beauty of the plant's white blooms. The Dutch botanist Carl Ludwig Blume formally described the genus in 1825, and the association with both moths and the goddess of beauty has given rise to its most enduring common names.
Phalaenopsis aphrodite was formally described from Philippine specimens in the mid-nineteenth century and became widely known to European horticulture through collections brought back by botanical explorers working in the Philippines and Taiwan. The species was one of the earliest Phalaenopsis to be cultivated in European glasshouses, where it attracted considerable attention for the longevity and purity of its white flowers. In Taiwan, the moth orchid holds significant cultural importance and is a popular gift for Lunar New Year celebrations, symbolising good luck, prosperity, and refinement. From the mid-twentieth century onwards, advances in meristem tissue culture allowed commercial producers in the Netherlands and Taiwan to propagate identical plants on a vast scale, transforming P. aphrodite and its hybrids into the best-selling potted plant in the world by the early twenty-first century.
