Fittonia albivenis is a low-growing, creeping perennial native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Peru and Colombia. It is grown primarily for its striking foliage, which features a dense network of white, pink, or red veins overlaid on deep green leaves. In its natural habitat it forms a ground-covering mat beneath the forest canopy, where it benefits from high humidity and filtered light.

Fittonia albivenis thrives in bright, indirect light, such as that found a metre or so back from an east- or north-facing window. Direct sunlight will scorch the delicate leaves and fade the intricate vein patterning, while very low light causes slow, leggy growth and dull colouration. A consistently bright but shaded position suits it best throughout the year.
Fittonia prefers evenly moist compost; it is notably sensitive to both drought and waterlogging. Water thoroughly when the top centimetre of compost feels just dry, then allow excess to drain freely and empty saucers after 30 minutes. Tap water left to stand overnight is preferable to cold water straight from the tap, as this reduces the risk of cold-shock to the roots.
A loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining compost is ideal. A good mix consists of two parts peat-free multipurpose compost to one part perlite and one part fine horticultural bark. This combination retains adequate moisture while preventing the waterlogging that leads to root rot, which Fittonia is particularly susceptible to.
Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength every two weeks during spring and summer. Reduce feeding to once a month in autumn and cease entirely in winter when growth slows. Over-feeding causes salt accumulation in the soil, which can scorch roots and leaf margins.
High humidity between 60 and 80 per cent is essential for healthy growth; in typical UK home conditions the air is often too dry. Standing the pot on a tray of damp pebbles, grouping plants together, or placing the plant in a terrarium or bathroom significantly raises humidity around the foliage. Temperatures should remain between 16 and 27 C, and the plant must be kept away from cold draughts, radiators, and air-conditioning units.
Repot every one to two years in spring when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes. Choose a pot only one size larger, as Fittonia prefers slightly snug conditions and excess compost volume retains moisture that can cause root rot. Shallow, wide pots suit its creeping habit better than deep ones.
Regular pinching out of the growing tips encourages a bushy, compact habit and discourages the plant from becoming straggly. Remove any flower spikes as they appear, since the inconspicuous blooms divert energy from foliage production and the spikes are not ornamentally significant. Leggy stems can be cut back hard in spring, and cuttings taken at the same time make useful propagation material.
Take 5-8 cm stem tip cuttings with at least two pairs of leaves in spring or summer. Remove the lower leaves, insert into moist perlite or a peat-free cutting compost, and cover with a clear bag or propagator lid to retain humidity. Roots form within three to four weeks at 20-22 C.
When repotting a mature, well-established plant, the root mass can be carefully divided into two or more sections. Each division should have a good portion of healthy roots and several stems. Pot each division separately and keep at high humidity until established.
Creeping stems that come into contact with moist compost will naturally develop roots at the nodes. Pin a healthy stem node down into a small adjacent pot of moist compost using a hairpin or bent wire, and separate from the parent plant once rooting is confirmed after three to five weeks.

The genus name Fittonia honours two Irish sisters, Elizabeth and Sarah Mary Fitton, who co-authored the 1817 botanical work 'Conversations on Botany', an influential popular science text aimed at introducing plant science to a general readership. The species epithet albivenis is derived from the Latin albus, meaning white, and vena, meaning vein, referring directly to the white-veined appearance of the type form of the species. The common name 'nerve plant' is a direct allusion to the vein pattern, which resembles the branching structure of the nervous system.
Fittonia albivenis was described formally by the Belgian botanist Émile Rodigas in 1889, though specimens had been collected from South American rainforests by European botanical expeditions earlier in the nineteenth century. It was introduced into European horticulture during the Victorian era and became particularly fashionable in Britain and the Low Countries as a subject for Wardian cases, the sealed glass terrariums developed by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward that enabled tropical plants to be maintained in heated drawing rooms. Its popularity declined in the twentieth century as Wardian cases fell out of fashion, but it experienced a significant revival from the 2000s onwards with renewed interest in terrariums and indoor gardening, and it is now one of the most widely sold foliage houseplants in the UK.
