Araucaria heterophylla is a coniferous tree native exclusively to Norfolk Island, a small territory in the South Pacific Ocean between Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. In its natural habitat it can exceed 50 metres in height, but as a houseplant it is valued for its symmetrical, tiered branches and soft, feathery juvenile foliage, typically reaching 1 to 2 metres indoors over many years. It has been widely cultivated as an ornamental since the 18th century and is particularly popular as a long-lived, slow-growing specimen plant.

How to care for Norfolk Island Pine

Light

Norfolk Island Pine requires bright light to thrive indoors. A position near a south- or west-facing window that provides several hours of bright, indirect light or gentle direct sunlight is ideal. Insufficient light is the most common reason for branch drop and a lopsided, sparse appearance. Rotating the pot by a quarter turn every week ensures even exposure and maintains the plant's characteristic symmetrical form. Direct midday summer sun through glass may scorch the foliage, so some filtering is beneficial in very hot spells.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top third of the compost feels dry to the touch, allowing excess water to drain fully and never letting the plant sit in standing water. Overwatering is a frequent cause of decline, leading to root rot, needle drop, and yellowing foliage. In winter, when growth slows, reduce watering frequency but do not allow the compost to dry out completely. Always use room-temperature water, and if tap water is very hard, consider using rainwater or filtered water to avoid salt build-up.

Soil and potting

A free-draining, slightly acidic mix is ideal, with a pH of around 4.5 to 5.5. A blend of loam-based compost, perlite or coarse grit, and a small proportion of pine bark works well. Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive composts, which can promote root rot. Peat-free mixes formulated for ericaceous plants can also be used as a base, adjusted with perlite for additional drainage.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser at half strength every four weeks during the active growing season from spring through to early autumn. Avoid overfeeding, as this can cause rapid, weak growth and salt accumulation in the compost. Do not feed during winter when the plant is resting. An occasional application of a fertiliser with a slightly higher nitrogen content can support the lush green colouring of the foliage.

Humidity and temperature

Norfolk Island Pine originates from a humid, maritime climate and performs best in humidity above 50%. Central heating in winter creates dry air that commonly causes needle browning and drop. Misting the foliage regularly, grouping plants together, or placing the pot on a tray of damp gravel can help raise humidity around the plant. Temperatures between 15 and 24 C are preferred; the plant can tolerate a minimum of around 10 C but dislikes frost entirely and should never be exposed to temperatures below 5 C. Avoid cold draughts from windows or doors in winter.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years in spring, moving to a container only one size larger than the previous one. Norfolk Island Pines are relatively slow growing and tolerate being slightly pot-bound, which can help restrict size and prevent overly rapid, lax growth. Use fresh, well-draining compost and handle the roots carefully, as significant root disturbance can cause temporary stress. Choose a heavy, stable pot to counterbalance the plant's height as it matures.

Pruning

Do not prune the main central leader under any circumstances, as this tree does not regenerate a new growing tip if it is removed, resulting in a permanently flat-topped plant. Lower branches that die back naturally can be removed cleanly at the trunk. Minor shaping is not generally recommended or necessary, as the plant's naturally symmetrical form is its main ornamental quality. Removing dead or damaged individual needles by hand is acceptable.

Is Norfolk Island Pine toxic?

Pets: Mildly toxic. According to the ASPCA, Araucaria heterophylla is considered toxic to both dogs and cats. Ingestion may cause vomiting, depression, and abdominal pain. The resin in the foliage and branches is thought to be the irritant compound. Keep the plant out of reach of cats in particular, as they may chew on the soft needles.

How to propagate

Seed

Fresh seed can be sown in a free-draining, slightly acidic seed compost at around 20 to 24 C with high humidity. Germination can be slow and irregular, sometimes taking several weeks, and seed viability decreases rapidly once the seed is not fresh.

Tip cuttings

Tip cuttings from the central leader will produce a upright, tree-like plant, but cuttings taken from lateral branches will grow horizontally and never form a proper upright tree. This method is therefore generally not recommended for producing a typical specimen, and success rates are low without mist propagation facilities.

Story and origins

The genus name Araucaria derives from 'Arauco', a region of Chile that is home to indigenous Mapuche people and also the native habitat of the related Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), which was the first species in the genus to be formally described. The species epithet heterophylla comes from the Greek words 'heteros' meaning different and 'phyllon' meaning leaf, referring to the marked difference in leaf shape between juvenile and adult growth stages on the same plant.

Norfolk Island Pine was first documented by Europeans during Captain James Cook's second Pacific voyage in 1774, when the naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster collected specimens on Norfolk Island. The botanist David Don formally described and named the species in 1839. It was introduced to European horticulture in the late 18th century and quickly became popular as a conservatory and drawing room plant among the Victorian upper classes, who prized its architectural symmetry and exotic origins. It remains a popular ornamental worldwide and in many warm coastal cities it is planted as a street tree, particularly in parts of Australia, the United States, and the Canary Islands, where it is so commonplace it is often mistaken for a native species.
