Goeppertia insignis, long sold under the synonym Calathea lancifolia, is a striking tropical perennial native to the rainforests of Brazil. It is best known for its long, lance-shaped leaves decorated with alternating dark green ovals along the midrib and a rich purple underside. Like other members of the prayer plant family, it exhibits nyctinasty, folding its leaves upward at night and lowering them again by day.

How to care for Rattlesnake Plant

Light

Goeppertia insignis thrives in bright, indirect light, such as a position a metre or so back from an east- or north-facing window. Direct sunlight will bleach or scorch the decorative leaf markings, so shade cloth or a net curtain is advisable if the plant is placed near a south- or west-facing window. Low light is tolerated for short periods but will slow growth and cause the foliage pattern to become less vivid.

Watering

The rattlesnake plant prefers evenly moist compost, watered when the top centimetre of soil feels dry to the touch. It is sensitive to both drought and waterlogging; the former causes leaf curl and crisp brown edges, while the latter promotes root rot. Crucially, this species is sensitive to fluoride and dissolved salts in tap water, which can cause brown leaf tips. Using filtered water, rainwater, or water that has been left to stand overnight at room temperature is strongly recommended.

Soil and potting

A loose, well-draining compost is essential. A suitable mix can be made by combining two parts peat-free houseplant compost with one part perlite and one part fine orchid bark. This retains adequate moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely, reducing the risk of root rot. Avoid heavy, compacted mixes that stay waterlogged.

Feeding

Feed once a month from April to September using a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength. Overfeeding causes salt build-up in the soil, which damages the roots and leads to brown leaf tips. Do not feed during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Humidity and temperature

As a native of humid Brazilian rainforests, Goeppertia insignis requires consistently high humidity, ideally 60 per cent or above. Group it with other plants, place the pot on a tray of damp pebbles, or use a room humidifier to maintain appropriate levels. Misting directly onto the leaves is not recommended as it can encourage fungal spots. Keep temperatures between 18 and 27 degrees C and avoid cold draughts, radiator heat, and positions near air conditioning units.

Repotting

Repot every one to two years in spring when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or circle visibly at the soil surface. Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one, as excess soil retains moisture and increases the risk of root rot. Terracotta pots aid moisture regulation, though plastic pots help retain humidity. Always use fresh compost when repotting.

Pruning

Pruning requirements are minimal. Remove any yellow, brown, or damaged leaves by cutting them cleanly at the base of the petiole using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs. This tidies the plant and redirects energy to healthy growth. Routine deadheading is not generally necessary as indoor flowering is uncommon.

Is Rattlesnake Plant toxic?

Pets: Non-toxic. According to ASPCA classifications, Calathea species (including Goeppertia insignis) are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion of large quantities of plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset in some animals.
People: Not considered toxic to humans. As with all houseplants, ingestion is best avoided, particularly by young children, and hands should be washed after handling.

Common problems

Brown, crispy leaf tips and margins
Likely cause: Low humidity, fluoride or mineral build-up from tap water, or overfertilising  Fix: Switch to rainwater or filtered water, increase ambient humidity, and reduce fertiliser frequency. Trim affected edges with clean scissors; they will not recover.
Leaves curling inward
Likely cause: Underwatering or very low humidity  Fix: Check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Boost humidity using a pebble tray or humidifier. Leaves should uncurl within a few hours of watering if drought was the cause.
Yellow leaves
Likely cause: Overwatering, waterlogged soil, or natural ageing of lower leaves  Fix: Allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings and ensure the pot drains freely. Check roots for rot; if detected, trim affected roots, dust with cinnamon, and repot in fresh compost.
Faded or washed-out leaf markings

Tiny webbing or speckling on leaves, particularly undersides

How to propagate

Division

The most reliable method. When repotting in spring, gently separate the rhizome clumps into sections, each with at least two or three healthy stems and a portion of roots. Pot each division into fresh, moist compost and keep in a warm, humid spot until established.

Rhizome cuttings

Small sections of rhizome with at least one growth point can be removed, dusted with powdered cinnamon to reduce fungal risk, and placed just below the surface of a moist propagating mix. Cover with a clear propagator lid or polythene bag to retain humidity and place in a warm position out of direct light.

Story and origins

The genus name Goeppertia honours Johann Heinrich Robert Goeppert (1800 to 1884), a German botanist and palaeobotanist who made significant contributions to the study of fossil plants. The species epithet insignis is Latin for 'remarkable' or 'distinguished', a reference to the plant's highly ornamental and striking leaf patterning. The former genus name Calathea derives from the Greek kalathos, meaning a basket, alluding to the basket-weaving uses of related species by indigenous South American peoples.

Goeppertia insignis is indigenous to the tropical rainforests of Brazil and was introduced to cultivation in Europe during the nineteenth century as part of the broader Victorian enthusiasm for exotic foliage plants. It became particularly popular in the latter half of the twentieth century as the houseplant trade expanded and demand grew for ornamental-leaved tropicals suited to interior conditions. The reclassification of many Calathea species into the reinstated genus Goeppertia in 2012, based on molecular evidence, caused considerable confusion in the horticultural trade, and the old name Calathea lancifolia remains in widespread use in nurseries and garden centres across the UK and Europe.

Why are the tips of my rattlesnake plant's leaves turning brown?
Brown tips are most commonly caused by low humidity, fluoride or chlorine in tap water, or salt build-up from overfertilising. Switch to rainwater or filtered water, increase humidity to at least 60 per cent, and reduce the frequency and strength of fertiliser applications. Once browned, the tissue will not recover, but trimming the edges with clean scissors and addressing the underlying cause will prevent further damage.
Why does my rattlesnake plant move its leaves?
This is a natural behaviour called nyctinasty. The plant raises its leaves upright at night and lowers them flat during the day in response to changes in light levels. The movement is driven by fluctuations in water pressure within specialised cells called pulvini at the base of each leaf stalk. It is entirely normal and a sign of a healthy plant.
How often should I water my rattlesnake plant?
There is no fixed schedule. Water when the top centimetre of compost feels dry, then water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. Frequency will vary with season, pot size, and room temperature, typically every five to ten days in summer and less often in winter. Always use rainwater or filtered water where possible.
Is the rattlesnake plant safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists Calathea species as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Goeppertia insignis falls within this classification. While ingestion of significant quantities of plant material may occasionally cause mild stomach upset, the plant is not considered dangerous to pets.
Why does my rattlesnake plant have yellow leaves?
Yellowing is most frequently caused by overwatering and waterlogged soil, which deprive the roots of oxygen. Check that the pot drains freely and allow the compost to dry out slightly between waterings. Occasional yellowing of the oldest, lowest leaves is a normal part of the plant's growth cycle and is not a cause for concern.
Can I grow a rattlesnake plant in a bathroom?
A bathroom can be an excellent location provided there is adequate indirect light, such as from a frosted or obscured window. The naturally high humidity from showers and baths suits this species well. However, avoid positions where the plant would receive no natural light at all, as artificial light alone is rarely sufficient for healthy long-term growth.
Is Goeppertia insignis the same as Calathea lancifolia?
Yes, they are the same plant. Following a large-scale phylogenetic revision of the Marantaceae family published in 2012, many species previously placed in Calathea were reclassified into the older genus Goeppertia. Calathea lancifolia became Goeppertia insignis as a result. Both names refer to the same species and you will commonly encounter either in nurseries and on plant labels.
