How to care for Ripple Peperomia

Light

Peperomia caperata thrives in bright, indirect light and is one of the more shade-tolerant houseplants available. It will adapt to moderate low-light conditions, though growth slows and the leaf corrugation may become less pronounced. Direct summer sun should be avoided as it can scorch the foliage and fade the deep colouring. A north- or east-facing windowsill, or a position set back from a south- or west-facing window, is generally ideal. It also performs well under full-spectrum artificial lighting, making it suitable for offices.

Watering

This species stores water in its thick leaves and stems and is therefore susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Allow the top half of the potting medium to dry out before watering again, and reduce frequency further during autumn and winter when growth slows. Water thoroughly at the base rather than overhead, as water pooling in the crown can cause rotting at the growing point. Always ensure the pot drains freely and never leave the plant sitting in a saucer of water for prolonged periods.

Soil and potting

A light, well-draining compost is essential. A general peat-free houseplant compost combined with 30-40% perlite or coarse grit provides adequate aeration and drainage. Peperomia caperata has a relatively small, shallow root system and does not require a nutrient-rich medium. Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive composts such as those formulated for ferns, as these increase the risk of root rot.

Feeding
