Ficus elastica is a large-leaved evergreen tree native to the tropical rainforests of South and Southeast Asia, particularly India, Nepal, and Indonesia. In its natural habitat it can reach heights exceeding 30 metres, though as a houseplant it is typically kept between 1 and 3 metres tall. It was historically cultivated for its latex sap, which was used to make rubber before Hevea brasiliensis became the dominant commercial source.

How to care for Rubber Plant

Light

Ficus elastica grows best in bright, indirect light and will produce the largest, glossiest leaves under these conditions. It tolerates lower light levels reasonably well, though growth slows noticeably and variegated cultivars may lose some of their colouration. Direct midsummer sun through glass can scorch the leaves, so a position a metre or so back from a south- or west-facing window is often ideal. Rotating the pot a quarter turn every few weeks encourages even, upright growth.

Watering

Overwatering is the most common cause of decline in rubber plants. Allow the top 2-3 cm of compost to dry out before watering thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain freely from the pot. In winter, when growth slows, reduce watering further and allow more of the compost to dry between applications. Always use room-temperature water, as cold water can shock the roots and cause leaf spotting.

Soil and potting

A free-draining, peat-free compost is suitable. A mix of general-purpose houseplant compost with added perlite (roughly 3:1) works well, providing the combination of moisture retention and aeration the roots require. Avoid heavy, compacted soils that hold water around the roots for extended periods, as these promote root rot.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser at half strength once a month during the active growing season, which runs broadly from April to September in the UK. No feeding is required from October through to March, when the plant is in a period of reduced growth. Over-fertilising can cause salt build-up in the compost and tip burn on the leaves.

Humidity and temperature

Ficus elastica prefers temperatures between 15 and 24 C and should not be exposed to temperatures below 10 C. It dislikes cold draughts, sudden temperature fluctuations, and being positioned near radiators or other direct heat sources. A moderate to high humidity of around 40-60% suits it well. Misting the leaves or using a pebble tray with water can help in dry indoor environments, particularly in winter when central heating reduces ambient humidity.

Repotting

Repot in spring when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or circle the surface of the compost, typically every 2-3 years for younger plants. Move up one pot size at a time, as excessively large pots retain moisture and increase the risk of root rot. When the plant reaches its desired mature size, top-dressing with fresh compost each spring is a suitable alternative to full repotting.

Pruning

Pruning is best carried out in spring or early summer. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches with clean, sharp secateurs. The plant can be cut back to control height or to encourage a bushier habit by pinching out growing tips. Wear gloves when pruning, as the milky white latex sap that exudes from cut surfaces is a skin and eye irritant. Applying a small amount of tissue to the cut will help the sap coagulate more quickly.

Is Rubber Plant toxic?

Pets: Toxic. Classified as toxic to both cats and dogs by the ASPCA. The milky latex sap contains proteolytic enzymes and ficin that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and dermatitis on contact. Ingestion of leaves may cause gastrointestinal upset. It is also toxic to horses.
People: The latex sap is a known skin and mucous membrane irritant and can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Repeated exposure may lead to sensitisation. Keep out of reach of children and wear gloves when pruning or handling damaged stems.

Common problems

Yellowing lower leaves
Likely cause: Overwatering or poor drainage, occasionally natural shedding of old leaves  Fix: Check the compost is not staying wet for extended periods. Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes and reduce watering frequency. If root rot is present, remove affected roots and repot into fresh, dry compost.
Brown, crispy leaf edges or tips
Likely cause: Low humidity, underwatering, cold draughts, or proximity to a heat source  Fix: Move the plant away from radiators and draughty windows. Increase watering slightly and raise humidity using a pebble tray or humidifier.
Leaf drop
Likely cause: Sudden change in location, temperature shock, overwatering, or cold draughts  Fix: Keep the plant in a stable position away from draughts and temperature extremes. Rubber plants dislike being moved and may drop several leaves when relocated; they generally recover once settled.
Small brown or yellow spots on leaves
Likely cause: Spider mite or scale insect infestation, or fungal leaf spot  Fix: Inspect the undersides of leaves for mites or scale. Treat mites with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and remove scale manually before applying an appropriate contact insecticide. For fungal issues, improve air circulation and avoid wetting the foliage.
Pale, washed-out leaves and leggy growth
Likely cause: Insufficient light  Fix: Move the plant to a brighter position with more indirect light. Variegated cultivars are especially sensitive to low light and will revert to plainer green colouration if not given adequate brightness.
Sticky residue on leaves or surrounding surfaces
Likely cause: Scale insects or mealybugs excreting honeydew  Fix: Inspect the plant carefully for scale insects along stems and leaf midribs, and mealybugs in leaf axils. Remove by hand with a cotton bud dipped in diluted isopropyl alcohol, then treat with neem oil or an appropriate systemic insecticide.

How to propagate

Stem cuttings

Take a cutting of around 10-15 cm with at least one leaf node, allow the latex to dry for 30 minutes to an hour, then insert into a moist mix of perlite and compost. Enclose in a clear plastic bag or propagator to maintain humidity and place in a warm, bright spot; roots typically form within 4-8 weeks.

Air layering

Make an upward-angled cut partway through a healthy stem, pack moist sphagnum moss around the wound, and wrap it securely with cling film to retain moisture. Once roots are visible through the moss after several weeks, sever the stem below the rooted section and pot up independently.

Leaf-bud cuttings

Cut a single leaf with a short section of stem and a node attached, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and insert into moist rooting medium. This method is less reliable than stem cuttings and slower to establish, but is useful when only a small amount of material is available.

Story and origins

The genus name Ficus is the classical Latin word for the fig tree and its fruit, reflecting the plant's membership of the fig family. The species epithet elastica is derived from the New Latin word for elastic or rubber-like, referring directly to the elastic, latex-rich sap produced by the plant. The common name 'Rubber Plant' or 'Rubber Tree' similarly points to this property, which made the species of commercial interest long before it became popular as an ornamental houseplant.

Ficus elastica was first formally described by the Dutch botanist Roxburgh in 1814 based on specimens from India, where it had long been known to local peoples for its latex. European interest intensified during the 19th century as industrialisation created demand for rubber, and the species was introduced to botanical gardens across the British Empire, including Kew Gardens, in the mid-1800s. Although it was largely superseded commercially by Hevea brasiliensis following the successful transfer of seeds to Kew in 1876 and the subsequent establishment of plantations in Malaya, Ficus elastica endured as an ornamental plant. It became a defining feature of Victorian drawing rooms and Edwardian conservatories and has remained one of the most popular houseplants in the UK and Europe throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

Why are the leaves on my rubber plant going yellow and dropping off?
The most common cause is overwatering, which leads to root stress or root rot. Check that the top few centimetres of compost are drying out between waterings and that the pot drains freely. Sudden changes in location, cold draughts, or temperature fluctuations can also trigger leaf drop; try to keep the plant in a stable, warm position.
How do I clean the leaves of a rubber plant?
Wipe each leaf gently with a damp, soft cloth to remove dust, which can inhibit the plant's ability to photosynthesise. Support the leaf from underneath with one hand as you wipe to avoid tearing it at the base.
