How to care for Snake Plant
Light
Dracaena trifasciata is highly adaptable to a wide range of light conditions, from dim corners to bright indirect light. Growth is slowest in low light, and variegated cultivars may lose some of their patterning in very poor light. Direct summer sun through glass can scorch the leaf tips, so filtered or indirect bright light is ideal for the best appearance and steadiest growth.
Watering
This plant stores water in its thick leaves and rhizomes, making it very susceptible to overwatering and root rot. Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain fully. In winter, watering once a month or even less is usually sufficient. Always err on the side of underwatering rather than overwatering.
Soil and potting
A free-draining mix is essential. A proprietary cactus and succulent compost works well, or a standard peat-free potting compost mixed with at least 50 per cent perlite or coarse horticultural sand. Good drainage at the base of the pot is equally important; ensure drainage holes are unobstructed.
Feeding
Feed sparingly with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength, once a month during the active growing season from spring through to late summer. Do not feed in autumn or winter when growth slows or stops. Overfeeding can cause soft, weak growth and may lead to tip burn.
Humidity and temperature
Dracaena trifasciata is tolerant of low humidity levels and does not require misting or a humidifier, making it well suited to typical indoor environments including heated homes in winter. It prefers temperatures between 15 and 29 C and should not be exposed to temperatures below 10 C or to draughts from cold windows or doorways. Frost will kill it.
Repotting
Repot every two to three years, or when the roots have completely filled the pot and begin to push through the drainage holes or crack the container. Choose a pot only one size larger, as a pot that is too large will hold excess moisture and increase rot risk. Terracotta pots are beneficial as they allow the compost to dry more quickly. Repot in spring if possible.
Pruning
Pruning is not routinely required. Remove dead, damaged, or discoloured leaves by cutting them off at the base with clean, sharp scissors or a knife. If a leaf tip browns, it can be trimmed to a point to maintain a natural appearance. Removing older outer leaves at the base will tidy the plant and encourage new growth from the centre rhizome.
Is Snake Plant toxic?
Pets: Toxic. Classified by the ASPCA as toxic to both dogs and cats. The plant contains saponins, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and drooling if ingested. Symptoms are usually mild to moderate and rarely life-threatening, but veterinary advice should be sought if ingestion is suspected.
People: Mildly toxic if ingested in quantity; the sap may cause skin irritation or dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Wear gloves when handling and wash hands afterwards. Keep out of reach of small children.
Common problems
Soft, mushy leaves or stem at the base
Likely cause: Root rot caused by overwatering or poorly draining compost Fix: Remove the plant from its pot, cut away all rotted roots and affected tissue with sterile tools, allow the rhizome to dry for a day or two, then repot into fresh, dry, well-draining compost. Reduce watering frequency significantly.
Brown, dry leaf tips
Likely cause: Underwatering, fluoride sensitivity, low humidity, or inconsistent watering Fix: Check the watering routine and ensure the plant is not left completely dry for excessive periods. Try using filtered or rainwater if tap water fluoride is suspected. Trim affected tips neatly. Improve consistency of care.
Yellow leaves
Likely cause: Overwatering, waterlogged soil, or very low light Fix: Allow the compost to dry out fully, check for root rot, and if necessary repot into fresh compost. Move the plant to a brighter position if light is the suspected cause.
Pale, washed-out or faded leaf colour
Likely cause: Too much direct sunlight causing bleaching, or insufficient light reducing pigmentation Fix: Move the plant away from harsh direct sun to bright indirect light. If in a very dark position, move to somewhere with more ambient light to restore pattern definition, particularly in variegated cultivars.
Small, sticky insects on leaves or webbing present
Likely cause: Mealybugs, spider mites, or scale insects, often encouraged by warm, dry conditions Fix: Wipe leaves with a damp cloth or cotton wool soaked in 70 per cent isopropyl alcohol. For persistent infestations, treat with neem oil spray or an appropriate houseplant insecticide. Increase humidity slightly and inspect other nearby plants.
Leaves curling inward or becoming wrinkled
Likely cause: Prolonged underwatering and dehydration of the leaf tissue Fix: Water the plant thoroughly, allowing water to drain freely. The leaves should recover their firmness within a few days. Adjust the watering schedule to prevent the plant from drying out for excessive periods.
How to propagate
Division
When repotting, separate offsets (pups) that have naturally formed at the base of the mother plant, ensuring each division has its own roots and at least a few leaves. Pot each division into its own container with fresh, well-draining compost.
Leaf cuttings in water or compost
Cut a healthy leaf into sections roughly 5 to 8 centimetres long, noting which end is the base, and insert them base-end down into moist compost or a jar of water. Roots and small pups will form after several weeks, though this method is slow and variegated cultivars will revert to the plain green form.
Rhizome cuttings
During repotting, sections of rhizome with a visible growth point can be carefully removed and potted individually in well-draining compost. Keep warm and barely moist until new growth appears, which may take several weeks to months.

Native to Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria, Tanzania. Now naturalised or cultivated in 45 other regions worldwide.
Story and origins
The species epithet 'trifasciata' is derived from Latin, meaning 'three-banded' or 'marked with three bands', a reference to the characteristic horizontal banding pattern of grey-green and darker green markings on the leaves. The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek 'drakaina', meaning 'female dragon', a name historically applied to plants in the genus on account of the red resinous sap produced by some species, which was likened to dragon's blood. The former genus name Sansevieria honoured Raimondo di Sangro, the Prince of Sanseviero, an eighteenth-century Italian nobleman and patron of science.
Dracaena trifasciata is native to tropical West and Central Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky habitats and open woodlands. It was described scientifically in 1794 by the Portuguese naturalist Vincenzo Petagna, though it had been observed and used by local peoples for far longer, particularly for the extraction of plant fibre from its tough leaves. It entered European cultivation during the eighteenth century and became popular as a Victorian parlour plant, valued for its striking appearance and exceptional tolerance of neglect and low light. In parts of Nigeria, it is still cultivated for traditional and medicinal purposes, and it holds cultural significance in several African and Asian traditions as a plant believed to bring good fortune or offer protection. It has since become one of the most widely cultivated houseplants on earth.

The most widely grown cultivar, bearing broad golden-yellow margins along the leaf edges.

Snake Plant FAQ
How often should I water my snake plant?
In summer, watering every two to four weeks is generally appropriate, allowing the compost to dry out fully between waterings. In winter, once a month or even less is sufficient. Always check that the soil is dry several centimetres down before watering again, as overwatering is the most common cause of death in this plant.
Can a snake plant survive in a room with no natural light?
It can tolerate very low light conditions better than most houseplants, but it cannot survive indefinitely with no natural light at all. In rooms with no windows, it would need supplemental grow lighting to remain healthy. In dim but not completely dark conditions, it will survive but grow very slowly.
Why are the leaves on my snake plant turning yellow?
Yellow leaves are most commonly caused by overwatering or waterlogged soil. Allow the compost to dry out completely, check the roots for signs of rot, and if necessary repot into fresh, free-draining compost. Insufficient light can also contribute to yellowing over time.
Is a snake plant safe to keep around pets?
No. Dracaena trifasciata is classified as toxic to dogs and cats by the ASPCA. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, and nausea. While fatalities are rare, the plant should be kept well out of reach of pets, and a vet should be contacted if ingestion is suspected.
Will my variegated snake plant keep its yellow edges if I propagate it from a leaf cutting?

My snake plant has never flowered. Will it bloom indoors?
Dracaena trifasciata does occasionally flower indoors, producing slender stalks of small, tubular, creamy-white flowers with a sweet fragrance, usually in spring or summer. Flowering tends to occur in mature plants that are slightly pot-bound and exposed to a period of drought stress or cooler temperatures. It cannot be reliably forced to flower.

However, subsequent research has concluded that the number of plants required to make a meaningful difference to air quality in a typical room is impractically large.
