Platycerium bifurcatum is an epiphytic fern native to eastern Australia, New Guinea, and Java, where it grows anchored to trees rather than in soil. It produces two distinct frond types: flat, rounded basal fronds that clasp the mounting surface, and large, forked, antler-shaped fertile fronds that give the plant its common name. It is one of the most widely cultivated of the eighteen Platycerium species and adapts reasonably well to indoor conditions.

Platycerium bifurcatum grows best in bright, indirect light, such as a position near an east- or west-facing window where it receives a few hours of gentle sun. Direct midday sun can scorch the fertile fronds, which are covered in fine, water-retaining trichomes that bleach under intense exposure. Low-light conditions cause slow, weak growth and reduce the dramatic form of the fertile fronds. In the Northern Hemisphere, a spot roughly one to two metres from a south-facing window, shielded by a light curtain, works well year-round.
Because the plant is epiphytic, its roots are adapted to cycles of wetness and drying rather than constant moisture. The most effective method is to submerge the entire mount or pot in water for 15 to 20 minutes, allow it to drain fully, and then wait until the basal fronds feel slightly dry and the potting medium is mostly dry before watering again. In summer this is typically every one to two weeks; in winter it may extend to three weeks or more. Avoid misting the basal fronds regularly as sustained surface moisture encourages rot. Never allow the root zone to sit in standing water.
As an epiphyte, Platycerium bifurcatum does not require conventional potting compost. When growing in a pot, use a very coarse, well-aerated mix such as orchid bark blended with a small amount of peat-free fibrous material like coco coir. The preferred method is to mount the plant on a slab of cork bark or hardwood board, lining the root area with a small pad of sphagnum moss to retain just enough moisture. This mimics natural growing conditions and promotes the development of the flat basal fronds, which will eventually clasp the board.
Feed monthly throughout spring and summer using a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half the manufacturer's recommended strength. A fertiliser with an NPK ratio around 20-20-20 is suitable. One effective approach is to add the diluted feed to the soaking water during the regular watering routine. Reduce feeding to once every six to eight weeks in autumn and cease entirely in winter when growth slows. Overfertilising can cause salt accumulation and tip burn on the fertile fronds.
Platycerium bifurcatum is among the more cold-tolerant Platycerium species and can tolerate temperatures briefly as low as 7 degrees C, making it suitable for cool conservatories, though it thrives best between 18 and 24 degrees C. Humidity of 50 percent or above supports healthy frond development; in dry centrally heated rooms, grouping plants together or placing the mount above a shallow tray of water can raise local humidity. Avoid positioning the plant near radiators, draughty windowsills, or air conditioning vents, all of which dry the air rapidly.
Mounted specimens rarely need repotting in the conventional sense; instead, the sphagnum pad can be refreshed and the mount replaced once the plant has outgrown it or the wood has deteriorated, typically every three to five years. Potted plants should be moved to a slightly larger container only when roots begin to crowd and drainage is impeded, which may be every two to three years. Always repot in spring at the start of the growing season. Handle the basal fronds carefully as they are brittle when mature and do not regenerate once damaged.
Do not remove the brown, papery basal fronds even when they appear dead and dry. These shield fronds protect the root system and accumulate organic matter that feeds the plant over time. Cutting them away can fatally expose the roots. Spent or damaged fertile fronds may be trimmed away at their base using clean, sharp scissors if they are genuinely dead and no new growth is emerging from the same point. The white, powdery trichomes on the fertile fronds should never be rubbed or wiped off, as they help the plant manage water and light.
Platycerium bifurcatum regularly produces small offset plants, called pups, at the base of the mother plant. Once a pup has developed at least two to three visible fronds and a small root mass, it can be carefully separated from the parent using a clean, sharp knife. The pup is then mounted on its own board or placed in a small pot of coarse mix and kept in a humid environment until established.
Fertile fronds produce spores in brown patches on their undersides. When these patches appear powdery, spores can be collected on paper and sown onto the surface of moist sphagnum moss or a very fine, sterile peat-free medium in a covered tray. Germination and development into recognisable plantlets is slow, often taking six months to a year, and requires consistent warmth and high humidity throughout.

The genus name Platycerium derives from the Greek words 'platys', meaning flat or broad, and 'keras', meaning horn, a reference to the broad, flattened, antler-like form of the fertile fronds. The species epithet 'bifurcatum' comes from the Latin 'bifurcatus', meaning two-forked or divided into two branches, describing the characteristic forking pattern seen on the mature fertile fronds. Together, the scientific name thus translates roughly as 'broad-horned, two-forked fern', an apt description of the plant's most distinctive visual feature.
Platycerium bifurcatum was first formally described by the French botanist Noel Martin Joseph de Necker in 1783, based on material from eastern Australia, and was subsequently revised within the genus by Carl Christensen in the early twentieth century. European botanical interest in the species grew significantly during the Victorian era, when the fashion for growing ferns indoors, a craze known as pteridomania, drove demand for unusual epiphytic specimens. Staghorn ferns became prized display plants in the conservatories of wealthy households and in the great public glasshouses of the period. In Australia, the plant holds cultural familiarity as a common sight on garden fences and trees, where it is often grown as an outdoor ornamental in subtropical and warm temperate regions.
