Cyathea cooperi is a fast-growing tree fern native to eastern Australia that can develop a slender fibrous trunk topped with an arching crown of finely divided fronds reaching up to 4 metres in length. It is one of the most widely cultivated tree ferns in the world, valued both as a large houseplant in cool conservatories and as a garden specimen in mild, frost-free climates. As a houseplant it requires careful attention to humidity and consistent moisture but rewards that effort with dramatic, architectural foliage.

Cyathea cooperi thrives in bright, filtered light that mimics the dappled canopy shade of its natural forest habitat. A position near a large east- or north-facing window is ideal indoors, where it receives good light without exposure to intense midday or afternoon sun. Direct sun, particularly through glass, will scorch the delicate fronds rapidly, causing irreversible browning. In low-light conditions growth stalls and fronds become pale and weak.
Consistent moisture is critical for this species. Water thoroughly whenever the top centimetre or two of the growing medium begins to dry, ensuring water drains freely from the base of the pot. The trunk fibres can be misted or lightly watered directly as they help absorb and retain moisture. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in standing water, and equally avoid letting the root ball dry out completely, as this causes frond dieback that cannot be reversed. Rainwater or filtered water is preferable to hard tap water.
A mix that is both free-draining and moisture-retentive is essential. A blend of quality multi-purpose compost with added perlite, coarse bark, and a small proportion of horticultural grit works well. The pH should be slightly acidic, around 5.5 to 6.5. Avoid heavy, compacted, or lime-rich substrates. Good aeration around the roots helps prevent fungal rots while still holding sufficient moisture between waterings.
Feed with a dilute, balanced liquid fertiliser at approximately half the recommended strength once a month during spring and summer. Avoid high-nitrogen formulations as they can promote soft, weak growth susceptible to pests. Do not feed in autumn or winter when growth is minimal. Over-fertilising causes tip burn and salt build-up in the compost; if this occurs, flush the pot thoroughly with plain water.
High humidity, ideally above 60%, is one of the most important requirements for healthy growth indoors. Standing the pot on a tray of moist pebbles, grouping it with other plants, or using a cool-mist humidifier nearby all help raise ambient humidity. Regular misting of the fronds can assist but is not sufficient on its own in dry interiors. Temperatures should remain between 10 and 24 C; the plant tolerates brief dips to around 5 C but frost will kill it. Avoid positioning it near radiators, air-conditioning units, or draughty windows.
Repot every two to three years in spring when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or circle visibly at the surface. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the previous one, as excessively large containers can hold too much moisture and promote root rot. Handle the root ball carefully to minimise disturbance. A heavy, stable pot is advisable given the plant's top-heavy crown. Adding a layer of fresh compost to the top of an established specimen (top-dressing) can substitute for repotting in very large plants that are difficult to move.
Remove only dead or fully brown fronds by cutting them cleanly at the base of the stipe (frond stalk), as close to the trunk as possible without damaging it. Never remove green or partly green fronds, as the plant still utilises them. The persistent stipe bases form the characteristic fibrous trunk and should not be stripped away. No other pruning is required or beneficial.
Collect mature spores from the underside of fertile fronds when the spore cases (sporangia) are ripe and dark brown. Sow thinly on a surface of moist, sterilised fine compost in a covered propagator at 18 to 22 C in indirect light. Germination and growth of the prothallus and then the juvenile sporophyte is very slow, often taking many months.
Cyathea cooperi occasionally produces small offsets or basal shoots. These can be carefully separated from the parent plant in spring with a clean, sharp tool, ensuring each offset has some roots attached, and potted individually into a moist, free-draining compost. Success is not guaranteed and the plant does not freely sucker.

The genus name Cyathea derives from the Greek word 'kyatheion', meaning 'little cup', referring to the cup-shaped indusia (protective coverings) that enclose the spore-bearing sori on the undersides of fertile fronds. The species epithet cooperi honours Daniel Cooper (1817 to 1842), a British botanist who served as curator of the herbarium at the Society of Apothecaries in London and contributed to the early documentation of Australian flora before his early death.
Cyathea cooperi was formally described by Sir William Jackson Hooker in 1844, based on specimens collected from eastern Australia during the era of intensive botanical exploration of the Australasian region. It quickly attracted horticultural interest in Victorian Britain, where the fashion for ferneries and Wardian cases made large, dramatic ferns highly desirable. Throughout the twentieth century it became one of the principal tree ferns exported globally for ornamental use. Its rapid growth made it commercially attractive, but this same trait has led to ecological problems in several regions outside its native range where it has naturalised and spread aggressively.
A commonly cultivated selection noted for its compact habit and slightly more cold-tolerant constitution, widely available in the horticultural trade.
