How to care for Variegated Monstera

Light

Monstera deliciosa Variegata requires bright, indirect light to thrive. The white or cream portions of the leaf contain no chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesise, so the plant relies entirely on its green tissue to produce energy. Too little light results in very slow growth and can cause the plant to struggle. However, direct summer sunlight will scorch the pale variegated sections easily, as they have no pigment to protect the cells. An east or west-facing window, or a position set back from a south-facing window, is generally ideal. Supplementary grow lights can be used successfully in darker homes.

Watering

Allow the top 3-5 cm of the potting mix to dry out between waterings. Because variegated Monsteras grow more slowly than their all-green counterparts, they take up water at a reduced rate, making overwatering a particularly common problem. Always check the soil moisture before watering rather than following a fixed schedule, as requirements vary with season, pot size, and ambient conditions. Use room-temperature water if possible, and ensure excess water drains freely from the pot. In winter, reduce watering frequency as growth slows further.

Soil and potting

A free-draining, chunky aroid mix is essential. A suitable blend might combine perlite, orchid bark, and a peat-free compost or coco coir in roughly equal parts. Good aeration around the roots helps prevent the root rot to which this plant is especially susceptible. Avoid dense, moisture-retentive potting composts sold for general houseplant use, as these tend to stay wet for too long. The mix should hold some moisture but dry out relatively quickly to prevent anaerobic conditions at the roots.

Feeding

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to the manufacturer's recommended strength. Because the variegated form grows slowly, it does not benefit from heavy feeding; excess fertiliser salts can accumulate in the soil and cause root burn. A fertiliser with an approximately equal NPK ratio suits general growth. Stop feeding in autumn and winter when the plant is not in active growth. Flushing the pot with plain water every few months can help clear any salt build-up.

Humidity and temperature

This plant prefers humidity of 60% or above, reflecting its tropical origins in Central and South America. In most UK homes, ambient humidity falls well below this, particularly in winter when central heating is running. A humidifier positioned nearby is the most reliable solution; alternatively, grouping plants together or placing the pot on a tray of damp pebbles can raise local humidity modestly. Misting is of limited value and can encourage fungal spots on the leaves. Keep temperatures between 18 and 27 C and avoid exposing the plant to draughts or temperatures below 13 C.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years, or when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or circle the base of the pot. Because this cultivar grows slowly, it generally does not need repotting as frequently as the green species. Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one, as excessively large pots hold more moisture than the roots can absorb and increase the risk of root rot. Repotting is best carried out in spring at the start of the growing season. Refresh the potting mix at each repotting even if the pot size remains the same.

Pruning

Pruning is primarily carried out to remove dead, damaged, or heavily browned leaves and to manage the plant's size or trailing stems. Always use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to make cuts just above a node to encourage new growth. Any leaf that has become entirely white through excessive variegation should be removed promptly, as it adds no photosynthetic capacity and will eventually die back. Because nodes are valuable for propagation, consider saving any healthy stem sections with at least one node rather than discarding them.

Is Variegated Monstera toxic?

Pets: Toxic. Monstera deliciosa contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout all parts of the plant. Ingestion by cats or dogs can cause intense oral irritation, drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. The ASPCA lists Monstera deliciosa as toxic to dogs and cats. Symptoms are generally self-limiting but veterinary advice should be sought if a pet has ingested any part of the plant.
People: The sap and raw plant tissue contain calcium oxalate crystals and can cause skin and oral irritation in humans. The ripe fruit of the standard species is edible, but the variegated cultivar rarely fruits indoors. Gloves should be worn when pruning or repotting to avoid skin irritation.

How to propagate

Cut a stem section that includes at least one healthy node and ideally one leaf; place it in a jar of clean water or wrap the node in damp sphagnum moss. Roots typically emerge within four to eight weeks in warm, bright conditions, after which the cutting can be potted into aroid mix.

Air layering

Select a healthy stem with at least one node, pack damp sphagnum moss around the node, and wrap tightly in cling film to retain moisture. Once roots are visible through the moss (usually after several weeks), cut the stem below the rooted section and pot it up.
