How to care for Velvet Leaf Philodendron

Light

Philodendron micans thrives in bright, indirect light, which encourages the largest leaves and most vivid colouration. Direct sunlight, especially through south-facing glass, will scorch the delicate velvety surface and fade the distinctive iridescence. It will tolerate lower light conditions better than many aroids, though growth will slow considerably and internodes may become elongated. An east- or north-facing windowsill, or a position set back from a bright west- or south-facing window, is generally ideal in UK conditions.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of the potting mix has dried out, allowing excess to drain freely from the pot. P. micans is susceptible to root rot if left sitting in waterlogged soil, so never allow the pot to stand in a saucer of water for extended periods. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter when growth slows and light levels drop. Use room-temperature water where possible; in areas with very hard tap water, rainwater or filtered water may help prevent mineral deposits on the leaves.

Soil and potting

A free-draining aroid mix is ideal, combining standard peat-free potting compost with additions of perlite or pumice (around 30-40%) and coarse orchid bark. This combination retains adequate moisture whilst allowing sufficient aeration around the roots to reduce the risk of rot. Pre-mixed aroid soils are widely available and suitable; avoid heavy, peat-dense composts designed for outdoor use.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength once a month during the active growing season from spring through to late summer. A fertiliser with a roughly even NPK ratio, or one slightly higher in nitrogen, will support the lush foliage. Do not feed during autumn and winter when the plant is not actively growing, as unused nutrients accumulate in the soil and can cause root burn.

Humidity and temperature

P. micans prefers humidity levels of 50-70%, which is above average household conditions in the UK, particularly in winter when central heating dries the air. Grouping plants together, placing the pot on a pebble tray with water, or using a room humidifier will help maintain adequate moisture in the air. The velvet leaf texture can be prone to marking from direct misting, so this method is best avoided. Maintain temperatures between 18-27°C and keep the plant away from cold draughts, radiators, and windowsills that drop below 12°C overnight in winter.

Repotting

Repot every one to two years in spring, moving up one pot size (roughly 2-3 cm larger in diameter) when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes or circle visibly within the pot. Avoid overpotting into excessively large containers, as too much soil volume around the roots retains moisture longer than necessary and increases rot risk. Refresh the potting mix even if not moving to a larger pot, as the organic components break down over time and reduce drainage.

Pruning

P. micans can be pruned freely to control its trailing length or to encourage a bushier habit. Snip stems just above a node using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs. Removing long, leggy stems will redirect energy to side shoots. Pruning is best done in spring or early summer, though light tidying can be carried out at any time. Is Velvet Leaf Philodendron toxic?

Stem cuttings in moist substrate

Take a node cutting as above and insert it into a small pot of moist perlite, sphagnum moss, or a light aroid mix. Enclose loosely in a clear plastic bag or propagation dome to maintain humidity and place in bright indirect light. Roots should form within three to six weeks.

Layering

Pin a section of an existing stem with at least one node against the surface of a separate pot of moist compost placed alongside the parent plant. Once the node has rooted firmly into the new pot, typically within four to six weeks, sever the connecting stem to create an independent plant.
