Dionaea muscipula is a carnivorous perennial native exclusively to a small region of the coastal plain of North and South Carolina, USA, where it grows in nutrient-poor, boggy soils. It is best known for its specialised snap-trap leaves, which close rapidly around insect prey to supplement the scarce nitrogen in its environment. Though widely kept as a houseplant, it has precise cultural requirements that closely mimic its natural habitat and must not be treated like a conventional indoor plant.

Venus flytraps require intense light to thrive and should receive at least four to six hours of direct sunlight per day. A south-facing windowsill is ideal in the UK, though supplemental full-spectrum grow lighting can substitute during low-light winter months. Insufficient light is one of the most common causes of weak, elongated growth and failure to produce functional traps.
Water quality is critical. Tap water contains minerals and dissolved solids that accumulate in the rootzone and are toxic to the plant over time. Use only distilled water, collected rainwater, or reverse-osmosis-filtered water exclusively. The preferred method is the tray technique: sit the pot in a shallow saucer containing one to three centimetres of water at all times during the growing season, allowing the roots to draw moisture upward. In winter dormancy, reduce watering so the compost remains only just moist.
Use a nutrient-free, acidic growing medium. A standard mix is one part sphagnum peat moss (or a peat-free alternative such as long-fibre sphagnum moss) to one part horticultural perlite or washed silica sand. Never use standard potting compost, loam, or any mix containing added fertiliser, as even low nutrient levels are damaging. Repot into fresh mix every one to two years to prevent decomposition of the medium.
Because Dionaea muscipula obtains nitrogen by digesting insects, it should never be fertilised through the soil or roots. If grown indoors without access to live insects, offer small live or freshly killed prey such as fruit flies, small crickets, or mealworms approximately once every two to four weeks during the growing season, placing them into one trap at a time. The prey item should be no larger than one-third of the trap's size. Avoid feeding during winter dormancy or offering human food, dead dried insects, or meat.
A relative humidity of 50% or above is preferred, though the plant can tolerate slightly lower levels if watering is consistent. Temperatures between 21 and 30 C are suitable during the growing season. Crucially, Venus flytraps require a cold winter dormancy of two to four months, during which temperatures should be kept between 0 and 10 C. Without dormancy the plant gradually weakens and dies within a few years. A cool, frost-free greenhouse, unheated conservatory, or cold frame is suitable for overwintering.
Repot every one to two years in spring, as the old growing medium breaks down and becomes waterlogged. Choose a pot with drainage holes; plastic pots are preferable to terracotta, which can leach minerals. Deep pots of at least 10 to 15 centimetres allow the long roots to develop properly. Handle the rhizome and roots gently, as they are fragile. Repot into fresh, unfertilised sphagnum peat or peat substitute and perlite mix.
Remove blackened, dead, or spent traps and leaves by cutting them cleanly at the base with sterile scissors. Dead traps are a normal part of the growth cycle; each trap has a limited number of closures before it dies back. After flowering, the flower stalk can be removed early to conserve energy unless seed production is desired, as flowering is energetically costly. Do not trim healthy green leaves.
In spring or early summer, carefully remove a healthy leaf by pulling it away from the rhizome so a small piece of white tissue remains attached at the base. Lay the leaf on moist sphagnum moss or peat and perlite mix, partially burying the white base section, and keep humid under a clear cover. Tiny plantlets may appear at the base within six to twelve weeks, though success rates are variable.
Mature plants frequently produce offsets or multiple crowns. When repotting, these can be gently separated from the main plant, ensuring each division has its own roots, and potted into fresh medium. Division is the most reliable propagation method for amateur growers.
Seed is sown fresh on the surface of moist, unfertilised sphagnum or peat and perlite mix in a bright, humid environment. Germination can take four to eight weeks, and seedlings are very slow to mature, typically requiring three to five years to reach adult size. Cross-pollination between two genetically distinct plants is needed for viable seed.

The genus name Dionaea derives from the Greek 'Dione', a Titaness in Greek mythology who was, in some traditions, regarded as the mother of Aphrodite (Venus). The species epithet muscipula is Latin, meaning 'mousetrap' or 'flytrap', from 'mus' (mouse) and 'capere' (to catch), though the intended reference was almost certainly to the trap's catching action rather than to mice specifically. The common name Venus flytrap therefore echoes the Latin genus name, both invoking the goddess of beauty, perhaps alluding to the plant's deceptively attractive appearance used to lure prey.
Dionaea muscipula was first described scientifically by the North Carolina colonial governor Arthur Dobbs in 1759, who wrote of a 'Catch Fly sensitive' plant in a letter. The species was formally named in 1768 by John Ellis, who sent a description to Carl Linnaeus. Linnaeus himself reportedly described it as one of the most wonderful plants in the world. The plant attracted enormous botanical curiosity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, partly due to widespread scepticism about whether plants could truly be carnivorous. Charles Darwin conducted detailed experiments on the species, publishing his observations in his 1875 work 'Insectivorous Plants', which did much to establish the legitimacy of plant carnivory. Today the plant endures as a cultural symbol of botanical curiosity and is among the most widely recognised carnivorous plants globally, despite its very restricted native range.
Also known as 'Red Dragon', this cultivar produces entirely deep burgundy-red colouration throughout all parts of the plant under strong light.
Selected for exceptionally large traps, sometimes exceeding five centimetres when mature, making it popular among collectors.
Features shortened, tooth-like trigger hairs arranged more densely along the trap margins, giving a distinctly serrated appearance.
The lobes of each trap curl inward to form a more rounded, cup-like structure rather than the flat profile of the typical form.
