Haworthiopsis fasciata · Asphodelaceae (subfamily Asphodeloideae)
Haworthiopsis fasciata is a compact, rosette-forming succulent native to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is characterised by its dark green, pointed leaves adorned with raised white tubercles arranged in neat horizontal bands on the outer surface, giving it a striking striped appearance. It is one of the most popular small succulents grown as a houseplant, valued for its architectural form, slow growth, and tolerance of indoor conditions.

Haworthiopsis fasciata thrives in bright, indirect light but is notably more tolerant of low-light conditions than most succulents. A position near a north- or east-facing window is suitable, though a south- or west-facing spot with some filtering is ideal. Direct summer sun through glass can scorch the leaves, causing them to bleach or redden unnaturally; some morning sun is acceptable. In very low light the plant will survive but growth slows considerably and the rosette may elongate.
This species is highly susceptible to root rot if overwatered, so the soil must be allowed to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water thoroughly and then wait until the top half of the compost is dry before watering again, typically every two to three weeks depending on conditions. In autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly, perhaps once a month or less. Always water at the base and avoid letting water sit in the rosette, as trapped moisture promotes rot and disease.
A gritty, free-draining mix is essential. A proprietary cactus and succulent compost is suitable, or you can amend regular peat-free multipurpose compost with up to 50 per cent perlite, coarse horticultural grit, or pumice. Good drainage is more important than fertility. A terracotta pot is preferable to plastic as it allows the compost to dry out more evenly and discourages root rot.
Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half the recommended strength, or use a specialist succulent fertiliser with a lower nitrogen ratio. Feeding encourages steady, healthy growth. Do not feed during autumn or winter when the plant is in its rest period, as excess nutrients combined with reduced light can cause weak, etiolated growth.
Haworthiopsis fasciata is well adapted to the dry air typical of most UK homes and does not require additional humidity. It prefers temperatures between 10 and 27 degrees C and will tolerate brief periods slightly below 10 degrees C but should not be exposed to frost. Avoid placing it near radiators or draughty windowsills in winter. A cooler, drier winter rest period can actually encourage flowering the following season.
Repot only when the plant is visibly pot-bound or when offsets have filled the container, typically every two to three years. Spring is the best time. Choose a pot only marginally larger than the root ball; too large a container holds excess moisture and increases the risk of rot. During repotting, gently remove any dead outer leaves and check the roots for signs of rot, trimming any affected sections with clean scissors before repotting into fresh compost.
Haworthiopsis fasciata requires very little pruning. Remove dried or dead outer leaves by gently pulling them away at the base. Spent flower stalks can be cut off at the base once flowering is complete. Offsets, commonly called pups, can be left in place to form a clump or removed for propagation. There is no need to cut back the main rosette under normal circumstances.
Haworthiopsis fasciata readily produces offsets around the base of the mother plant. In spring, gently separate a pup with a few roots attached using a clean knife or by hand, allow the cut to callous for 24 hours, then pot into slightly moist succulent compost. This is the most reliable propagation method.
A healthy, firm leaf can be removed cleanly from the base of the rosette, allowed to callous for one to two days, then laid on or partially inserted into barely moist succulent compost. Success rates are lower than with offset division and the process is slow, but a small plantlet may eventually develop at the leaf base.
Seeds can be sown on the surface of fine, moist succulent compost in spring and covered with a thin layer of grit or left uncovered, then placed in a warm, bright position. Germination is slow and variable; this method is rarely practical for home growers but is used by specialist nurseries.

The genus name Haworthiopsis is derived from Haworthia, which was itself named in honour of Adrian Hardy Haworth (1767 to 1833), a British botanist and entomologist who made significant contributions to the taxonomy of succulents and other plant groups. The suffix '-opsis' is from the Greek meaning 'resembling' or 'appearance of', indicating that plants in this genus resemble those of Haworthia. The species epithet 'fasciata' comes from the Latin 'fascia', meaning band or stripe, a direct reference to the distinctive horizontal white banding on the leaves.
Haworthiopsis fasciata was first described scientifically by Adrian Hardy Haworth in 1804 under the name Aloe fasciata, and it was subsequently moved through several genera before settling under Haworthia for most of the twentieth century. It was a recognised ornamental plant in European botanical collections from the early nineteenth century onwards, when plant collectors began importing South African succulents in greater numbers. The 2013 reclassification into Haworthiopsis, proposed by Attempts by Attempts Bayer and Molteno, was part of a broader revision of the Haworthia group based on genetic evidence. In South Africa the plant holds no particular cultural or medicinal significance, unlike some other succulents, but it has become one of the ten best-selling houseplant succulents worldwide, partly owing to its suitability for low-light interiors and its compact size.
